After the calibration has taken place, the processor in the receiver allows you to apply three different kinds of equalisation.

Front ref endeavours to make all the speakers sound like the main front pair

Engineer attempts to make your whole system sound as much as is possible like that in the test-room at Sony where Chief Distinguished Engineer Kanai tunes and voices equipment

Full flat goes for the flattest frequency response across the whole system.

Which you choose is a matter of personal taste.
