BX2 and Yamaha RX-V671

Hi

I recently bought a pair of Monitor Audio BX2s and a Yamaha RX-V671. Listening to two channel music I am dissapointed, with what I perceive as distortion/clipping when I turn it up to about -10dB.

Am I expecting too much from a budget setup? Is it likely to be the speakers (rated 100W) or amp (90W per channel) letting me down at high volumes? I'm not bi-amped or bi-wired.

That's pretty ,loud.

Im familiar with Yamaha and MA, but never had them that loud 🙂

Tbh, I'd expect some distortion with those levels.

I use MA/Yamaha and must say at -20db the whole room shakes and never taken it louder than that. When you turn it up to -10db is it really loud in your setup? How big is your room? Do you have a sub?

It's quite a large room 4m x 8m, with no sub yet (on xmas list).

Obviously it depends on source material but it is pretty loud at -10, but loosing composure. Maybe I should have gone for floor-standers to get a bigger sound.

As long as the sound is fine at lower volumes then I would imagine you are expecting too much from those relatively small speakers. Once you get a sub you may find you get the extra oomph at slightly lower volumes and it all sounds good. If not then maybe you would be better off with fllorstanders I'm not sure.

Systems that sound very good may struggle at continuous high volumes and that is why lots of people advise more powerful equipment if this is your preference.

-10db, thats almost 100% thats like 90% on the volume dial .....at No.9 on a scale that go's up to 10... you need to upgrade your speakers.

I'm suprised you get to that level; without blowing your speakers, When I first got the a Yamaha (same 90watts pc) I owned a pair of 100wpc Sony 176s speakers - floorstanders and they would start pucking around 42db - if those speakers have survived and are not damaged they are good speakers.

Try using two of the other amp channels on the Yammy to bi-amp. You are probably pushing them too hard, but assuming your MAs aren't completely fried, this method of biamping will let you see how they perform with the tweeter and main driver being handled separately by four of the power amps in your 671.
