You think retailers are controlling stock?! Retailers aren’t generally the ones putting themselves out of business. Sony are the ones controlling stock levels, and the chip shortage is no longer an excuse they can use.

It takes between 12 and 24 weeks to etch a chip, so you have a long lead to to overcome. Most fab plants are booked up until Q1 2023. It takes on average 3 years to build and tool a plant (and a massive amount of investment - around £15billion). So if they started to address the 2020 chip shortage in good time then you'd start seeing the benefits around Q2 or Q3 of 2023.

Of course the lockdowns in China don't exactly help matters.

There’s more to this Sony situation than that in my opinion. No other games consoles have a current issue, as far as I’m aware. The Sony situation is just ridiculous. They keep churning out new TVs every six months though.
