WHF have just reviewed the Sony S770, thank you, but it doesn't elaborate on the ability of the player to decode HD sound. I have very specific needs! (although I am sure that I am not alone). I have an expensive AV amp - albeit yesterday's technology (Yamaha Z9) and would like to be able to hear an improvement in the sound tracks to HD films using the optical links to stream HD sound. Can it be done??????

As far as I'm aware, optical and digital coax don't have the bandwidth for HD audio, you have to use HDMI. If your amp accepts multi channel pcm, I'm sure the player will decode and output the sound as pcm, my older and cheaper S350 does.

No HD through optical/electrical digital connections I'm afraid.

You may be better off getting a BDP-S760 as this has multi analogue outs to send HD to your amp. The 770 omits multi-outs.

What it means is you will not hear HD audio, unless you connect your player via multi analogue outs to the multi analogue input on the amp, and for that you will need a player with the multi analogue sockets.
