Having listened to some music on the Hd tracks website I am now interested in how to download these tracks and if possible play tham on my Ipod.

I understand that you need to burn them onto a DVD rather than a Cd or you will only get 16 and not 24 bit music, however, I do not have a DVD burner on my Pc.

Will any outboard(usb connected) DVD burner do or does it have to be a particular spec? and recommendations??

What software will I need to convert a 24/96 FLAC file into something Itunes will consume

Thanks

if you're using a Mac, then Max will convert flac to alac or aiff. not sure what you would use on a pc. i have no idea if an ipod can play a 24/96 file.

i've never tried it but i think to burn them to a disc, you need to make a dvd-audio disc and then play it in a compatible machine - maybe a standard dvd player?

as in Craig's post - you need to convert to aiff or alac first (max for mac, do not know for pc. maybe xld?)

then your itunes can play alac or aiff files up to 24/192. all OK if you use analog uutput on the computer. but if digital, you then need to check what is the max sample rate your computer hardware can output (my macmini eg is limited to 96khz via optical).

then the ipod: it will only accept and play files up to 24/48. so if you want to synch and play a file that is 24/96 or 24/192 in itunes, you need to either:

- use the option of converting to 128kbps aac as you synch ('on the fly'), or

- create a compressed version of the file (eg 320 mp3, 320 AAC) and then this version will sunch to ipod without the need to convert to 128aac on the fly

So, as you see, not very convenient for ipod and kind of negates the benefit of the original hi-res file.

As for burning to DVD: what for? if it is for back-up, yes you can burn it just as any other data file. or you can back it up as part of the general hard disk back-up.

For playing - I am not sure how (if at all) you can play say flac or alac hi-rez file from a data DVD.

On a PC foobar2000 will downsample and convert to Apple lossless (ALAC). I used this to try the Band on the Run 24/96 on my iPhone.

Sorry - but I dont see the point of downloading high-quality 24/96 audio and then playing them on a portable device.

But the sound quality out of a mobile device doesnt match the source.

Its one thing playing them on a £5k setup in your home - its something completely different playing them on a portable.

My htc desire can play 24/96 flacs - but they dont sound anything like if I listen to them on my home setup.

- As to the title of the thread - You could burn the files to a DVD-A and play them back on a universal player - or selected blu-ray players.

Thanks for all the replies, the reason for wanting to burn on to DVD was to have a permanent hard copy as well as being stored on my Nas.
