I hear what you are saying but my query was more about the amp/speakers budget split.

Sorry, missed that. Should have read your first post more attentively.
Most ask regarding complete system.
40/60 in that case.
Possibly more if you need to incorporate decent speaker stands.

If we ignore the misbehaving room for the moment, Speakers are the least well behaved item of equipment in the chain, especially now with digital source and solid state amplification being so well sorted.

To my mind this pushes the emphasis towards speakers.
