Hi, currently I listen to music mostly through my audiotechnica a900 headphones. However recently I've been listening to quite a lot of music through a cheap 5.1 pc speaker system.

I was looking at setting up a budget hi-fi system (amp and stereo speakers) for around £200. However I do really enjoy the presence of the subwoofer in my 5.1 pc speakers. Is it possible/advisable to also buy a subwoofer and connect it to the amp and play along side the stereo speakers? If so what proportion of the cost of the whole system should I be looking at?

Any advice? Would buying second hand (off ebay) be worth it, and if so what should I be looking for?

Hi qbf

This is a bit tricky, given your limited budget. You would have to buy s/hand and I'll give you a couple of options:

Speakers - Wharfedale Diamond 9.1

Amplifier - Something like a Nad or Arcam Alpha + CD player.

Look on Richer Sounds website. They sometimes have unboxed items at reduced prices, if Fleebay doesn't appeal to you. I'll have a quick look around. But as I said, it's difficult on the budget.

Keep your eye on these 2, the mission M72's offer lots of bass, punch an exciting listen with a good amount of detail. The NAD C320 BEE has been an award winning amplifier with good reason, with lots of weight authority and clarity to the music. Jobs a good un

the wharfedales mentioned are nice to but I prefer the Missions because of the depth of bass and upfront sound.

Thanks very much for the replies. I'll keep an eye on the nad amp and m72 speakers on ebay.

I have also looked at the Tannoy F1 speakers, how would these compare to the wharfedale 9.1's and the mission m72s. They are around the same price but are more modern.

How easy would it be to connected a sub to a stereo amp, or is it not recommended?

I am not very clued up on subs but what i can say with confidence is a sub is not needed with the missions, they kick out so much bass. The Tannoy's are nice to but lack depth in bass that is why i didn't mention them, they are though good speakers and a bargain at the price.
