Dear all

I am planning in the next couple of months to purchase (a) a blu-ray player, as my old DVD player blew up a few weeks ago, and (b) a new telly, as my old one is very small and horrible.

I am likely to get a 32" full HD box, not sure exactly which, but these I can easily compare in shops and such like; most likely it will be a reasonably high-end one. Don't want anything bigger as it will dominate the room.

However, I'm not sure about the Blu-ray player, but have mostly been considering ones from the Sony range (S360, S550, S760) I have a number of considerations to bear in mind:

a) considering I am only going to get a 32" TV; is the step-up in picture quality from model to model going to be discernible?

b) I am planning to output using phono outputs to my hi-fi (see signature), and am not planning on upgrading to 5.1 or higher for aesthetic reasons (and because I have enough boxes as it is). Has anyone done any comparisons on the quality of on-board decoding for these or any other players? While I might get a DAC at some point I don't really want to have to consider that at the moment as I need to save the money for other things (such as a sofa to sit on to watch all of this).

c) I have quite a number of DVDs that I am not planning to repurchase as blu-ray, so DVD upscaling is important.

I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone with an informed viewpoint has to offer

Thanks

Yes i would go for the Sony S360 from Blockbusters for £149 with four free films a bargain, i don't think spending anymore will vastly improve your picture, you will be delighted im sure. But a trip to a Sony centre may help your descision good luck.
