I have a 1080p panel tv (Sony 40W4500), however, when i've hired a blu-ray movie i read the back to see what codec it uses for sound, aspect ratio, etc, but when it comes to the display it always says 1080p, yet when i sit down too watch the film there's always black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. So the film can't be 1080p or it would fill the screen, the only time my i get a full display at full hd is when i play GT5 prologue on my PS3.

Am i missing something here or have i got it right? any views would be welcome.

You're missing something.

1080p has nothing to do with a screens aspect ratio which you are referring to.

Your tv is 16:9 ratio and therefore a 16:9 or 1.85:1 film would fill the screen.

A 2.35:1 film obviously would not fill the screen and you get black bars top bottom. Some sets you can zoom in but then you lose the edges. There can be other display options too.

A 4:3 film or tv prog would have blacks bars left right on a widescreen telly unless it's stretched to get chunky people.

GT5 is made full screen, simple.

What he means is that his TV has 1080 pixels vertically, but seeing as though the image does not fill all of it, it cannot possibly be 1080p, because only 817 pixels are being used

O.K. i understand the aspect ratio, though thats not what i was on about. What i'm trying to get across is that if my screen is 1080*1920 panel and for arguements sake the film is only using 3/4 of the display avilable then said film cannot be 1080p, i.e 3/4 0f 1080 is 810 lines while the other 270 lines are made up of the black bars above and below image.

Now do you see where i'm coming from?

I should have guest as much Clare, image 1080p, but how much of that image you get to see as a film depends on aspect ratio. Not that i'm complaining, is a fantastic picture and i feel really sorry for those people who are having problems with their w4500's
