Having established that home cinema amps don't play music as well as hifi amps I was wondering whether you in the future you might look at how a basic computer stored music system compares with a basic marantz CD player.

For example how does uncompressed music stored on a lacie cinema classic, and fed through a cambridge DAC magic using a optical cable compare?.As I've seen a lacie for around £150 quid, I guess that is one of the cheapest ways to do this?

Or how about an ipod using a Onkyo ND-S1 into a dac magic?

I ask this because I don't know how far computer based music has developed, the Naim unit looks brillant but are there cheaper alternatives?

Recently reflecting on how quickly vinyl was replaced by CDs I realise that CDs miight not be around much longer ( except as a specialist item like vinyl). So im getting more interested in computer based music, spotify is just brillant

Regards

Vinyl to CD was analogue to digital. Downloads are still digital. We're simpy consuming it in various different formats now. Plus, many people still burn their downloads onto CD for playback in the car etc.

Also, most mainstream music downloads are not even CD quality. Even if streaming takes off, many will simply buy CDs and rip them to their NAS drives.

Another example is Linn - on their website they have info on how to burn your 'studio master' downloads to DVD as DVD-A. Both for backup purposes and for "playback in a DVD-A player".

The shiny disc aint going anywhere fast (though I'm sure it'll eventually get there!).
