Hi, I'm looking for a Blu Ray solution for my system. At the moment I'm using two players, a Sony S570 and a Pioneer LX54. I'm impressed with the Sony's error free usability. The Pioneer does have much better sound and picture quality but it as lots of operational problems I've covered in the forums over the last few months. Basically I'm looking for a high quality 3D Blu Ray player that has the Sony's error free usability and Pioneer's picture and sound. I know that there's the Cambridge Audio's new BDP751, but at about £800 it's just too much. My top budget is about £450 and doesn't have to be the latest machine. It just as to work properly and to a high standard. Any suggestions?

Wait for the firmware upgrade, Jase. Keep the faith!

(Especially as it was you who convinced me to give the LX54 a fair crack)

(Having said that, if you do find the perfect player, let us know!)

Well we all have are limits. I am hoping that Pioneer come up with the goods. It would save me some money which i'd like to send on discs after all. At the minute I'm yet again swopping the Pioneer out and putting the Sony back in. Back to the cupboard for you until the next update. I just feel I'm loosing the faith.

At this point i would like to admit that i spent thirty minutes on sunday night moving things around so that i have the 570 and the LX54 both plugged in.

If i get sick with the LX54, i'm just going back to the 570 full time. I've always been more than happy with it.

And at least the LX54 was "free".

Hi bigboss, thanks for the links. I've just followed them and the Oppo looks really nice. I've just got to find some reviews, although I'm not always in total agreement with them. So will use them as a guide and then check them out in the skin.

Thought it was just me. My wife and kids keep looking at me "gone out". I've a coffee table full of remotes!

If you can stomach an ex-demo model, this offer on the Marantz BD7004 looks good (WHF review here).

I picked one up with WHF's help through the Savvy shopper article and demoed it against its little brother, the BD5004, the Sony BDP-S570, Panasonic DMP-BDT300 and the Cambridge Audio 650BD. In my auditioning, it beat the lot, especially when it came to audio and motion. And I've not had one disc that hasn't played as yet so compatability seems excellent too. Bit slow to load discs compared with my PS3 - doesn't bother me personally though.

Ignore everything I just said - didn't see you needed 3D!

Sorry!

Well then, that settles it. Buy a Harmony remote, spend some time setting that up until the new firmware arrives, and then spend the rest on some discs(!)

There are some very positive reviews online.

Nope, although I have my eye on the 95 when it comes out

OPPO have the best after market service ive ever known for a hifi electronics company. They constantly update firmware to keep on top of things. I was amazed when I heard of one guy that had a strange occurance with his MKV files. They asked for a disc with them on so they could personally look into it (not like sony (Just as one example) who require several thousand people complaining before theyre seen to be doing something)

To put it another way, if theres anything the 93/95 wont play, its pretty much only a matter of time before it will.

The 93 is (in my opinion) the best player you can buy at the price until you get to the oppo 95 price range, in which case that takes over (if you were to use its DACS. If not then the 93 wins all round)

Agreed, have had the 83 for about 18 months and only error was on Alien BD's (zoom into corner of picture) Sent off an e-mail and very promptly recieved reply with a few hotfixes. Very prompt and really seem to take their service seriously. Really like the 83 and the 95 looks fabulous in both spec and looks. Really looking forward to seeing what people make of it.

Hi Jase

I can say from personal experience the oppo 93 is the bluray drive to beat at its price point, yes I know I sell them, but I sell others as well but the oppo is head and shoulders in every respect than any other bluray drive I have used here in my dem room or otherwise.

Everything is better, audio, pq, file format playback, loading times

As mentioned earlier, support from oppo is probably the best out their

You ought to look at an oppo, I promise you won`t be disappointed

Any word on when the 95s out? And when the 95s out with multiregion mod?

Well the Oppo sounds very promissing. I can't help but feel let down with the Pioneer I've have now. The question is are all the problems people have with playback issues, really the complete fault of the player? Like many other people, I find that the blu ray player works perfectly when connected directly to a TV. Its only when you connect it through the AV Amp that the problems occur. Lip-sync being the most common. Theres also handshaking problems for the player and other components.

I think most people suffer from the odd handshake problem that use an amp inbetween

Is 'FILM MODE' set to 1 at all on the tv? It shouldnt be.

It would also be advisable to set the amp to 'THROUGH' as opposed to any form of processing

Jase,

I gotta say that the only problem i've had with the LX54 in the couple weeks i've had it is the lack of DLNA. I've not had any single lip sync / sound drop out issues.

Do find the fan noticeable, but only when everything else is completely silent.

So i'm pretty happy with it, especially as it was "free"

(It's running through the pioneer 53 amp)

You can't knock the free bit. I've been going over all my settings again over the last week and am happy to say with the help from the Sony UK forum, that I've been able to reduce the effects of lip sync to a minimum on the worst effected discs and solved them completely on the others. I've also found that after the latest firmware update, I can now control the player with the Sony TV remote via HDMI. So things are getting better now that my TV is no longer at war with my Pioneer blu ray or any other equipment.

I used to get so frustrated by this to the point where I reckon that Auto Lip Sync via HDMI is not all it's cracked up to be. I ended up connecting my Laptop directly to the TV via HDMI and running the counter from the web site below to calculate the exact delay on my TV and then set up my AVR with the Auto Lip Sync function turned off and the correct delay input in milliseconds and now my sync is finally rock solid.

Connect your laptop to your TV via HDMI and set the screens to mirror each other (so the same thing is each screen) and run the timer. Using a digital camera take a picture of the two screens and then in the photo you'll see difference in time from one to the other. Subtract the Milliseconds on the TV from the PC and you'll have your delay. Note- I would connect directly to the TV as opposed to the AVR as the AVR will probably introduce some lag that will [/b]automatically be compensated for.

Timer
