I have ordered Sky HD which is being installed in a couple of days. I have an Onkyo 606 receiver and Kef 1005 speaker system and a Panasonic 42 inch plasma. I have read in what hi-fi that Sky HD only produces stereo sound when connected with the HDMI lead, will I therefore have to also use an optical cable to get 5.1 surround sound?

Yes you do have to use an optical cable for the sound then change the sound settings in the sky box to dolby digital! Does sound really good still especially on BBC HD.

I have set up Skyhd via hdmi and digital optical for audio. I then assigned them using the onk audio set up. Would I expect my subwoofer to be active during normal hd tv programmes? How do I know I'm getting Dolby surround? I'm sceptical about the listening modes since are these not ways to force the sound into particular settings?

On my 606 pressing display on the remote will toggle the amp display round and show the current sound format that it is receiving.

Use the Listening Modes in setup to setup defaults for all the varioius sound formats that you could received.

On SkyHD the could be DD5.1, DD2.0 , PCM etc.

The 606 will then auto adjust to your setup listening mode based on the signal that it is getting.

Works like a dream
