Kef R500 .

Or on eBay there is a 2nd hand pair of PMC Twenty 23 - good deal by the looks of it.

Again on eBay a 2nd hand pair of Kef R700 for £1299 - another good deal.

I pretty much only buy 2nd hand or ex-display - best way to get a bargain.

+1

There's the PMC 23s and the slightly older (although originally more expensive) model OB1s on Ebay at the moment. Both fine speakers!

At that budget. A hell of a lot.

have you narrowed down your search in any way?

size,colour,floorstander, stand mount etc.?

My own personal choice would be focal aria 926. But that's me. I love the whole design, quality and sound of focal speakers.

You should try to get some speakers that "go well" with your amplifier...the synergy is what matters in the end *mosking*

For example i just got Focal Arias 936...i really liked the results with Arcam...also heard with Naim and i almost hated it *beee*

For about £1300 you can have brand new Monitor Audio Silver 8 voted best speaker by HiFi Choice and / or new Tannoy Revolution XT 8. Both sound excellent with any decent amplification.

I do not see a single reason you should be recommended a fleebay. Buy new or from Fanthorpes and you will not get shafted.

Good luck!

do actually advertise on e bay too, it's how I came across their site originally.

Buying second hand has worked out well for a hell of a lot of people though, enabling them to get gear they otherwise wouldn't have been able to consider. But I get your point about new over second hand. Fanthorpes PMC ex show shock comes complete with the new 20 year warranty for parts and labour, if ever required. Plus there's the trade in option.

Anyway, I hope the OP enjoys whatever route he takes in acquiring his new purchase.

What makes you think you will get "shafted" on "fleabay"? I buy and sell lots of stuff on there. I usually deal with hifi bods like myself. No shafting in sight.

Same here. Do your diligence on the seller, and you'll not go wrong.

Maybe Jerry's view is based on a bad personal experience? I was messed around big time by a 'business' operating out of E Bay but regarding individual sellers dealing on there, I've never had any issues.

It's all about the balance of probabilities.

Would you like to take on a sporting bet?

I'll buy the 2nd hand speakers I recommended on page 1 of this thread. We'll get together (possibly at Fanthorpes?) and compare these against a pair of MA Silver 8's or Tannoy XT 8's. If the Silver or XT 8's sound better I'll pay you £1000. If my speakers sound better, you pay me £1000?

If £1000 is too much for you and you'd prefer a bet of £10, I'll bring some other speakers that I've already bought 2nd hand off ebay for less than £500.

If I were to win this sporting bet, then you might want to have a rethink on who is getting "shafted": - the Fanthorpes customer or the ebay punter.

Good for you. You cannot do your own marketing so that bay is your outlet.

What is the logic not to try new and discounted goods first from Hi-Fi dealers first [like Nintronics Tannoys Definition 8] [or Fanthorpes MA GX Gold 100] first and then turn to seconedhand?

I've got my MA Gold GX200 brand new from Fanthorpes at a better price than I would have found on a bay at that time.

This is a personal preference of course. Jimmy asked for advice on speakers for £1300 and was flooded with eebay options.

I suggested to consider new speakers first in that price bracket. I think its only fair.

There is this story about a lad wanting to pay for his grocery at the supermarket with a frozen rabbit he got cheap on a bay. Supposed it's true?

It's all about the balance of probabilities.

Jerryapril, the big problem with buying new or nearly new from a dealers such as Fanthorpes is that it's highly likely that one would pay more and get worse sound quality than if one followed my advice and bought what I recommended off ebay.

The other big problem is that if you buy new or nearly new off a dealer first, and then take a punt on ebay, you've taken a depreciation hit on the new or nearly new kit. If you do it the other way and buy off ebay first, for the right price, you can sell it on later for the same price or for a small profit.

Another problem is that I am not aware of any speakers available new or nearly new from UK dealers for less than £1500 that I would actually want to keep or that I could recommend on the basis of the sound quality they offered. The main genre of speakers that you're looking at are slimline, ported, built down to a budget speakers, which all have fundamental flaws when it comes to sound quality. Plus there are one or two models of small, built down to a budget sealed box speakers, which are also fundamentally flawed. On the other hand there are lots of speakers available 2nd hand in that price bracket that are not of the budget slimline ported speaker or small sealed box genres.
