Fully kitted out Roksan Xerxes is a thing to hear and behold IMO. Townshend's The Rock, Garrard 301, 401 and the Loricraft Garrard 501 all look and by all accounts sound superb too.

Check out this link for the Google Images selection on the Garrard 301 and some of the stunning custom built jobs here - this is the 301 motor unit, a bespoke plinth and an arm of your choice. Wonderful stuff.

The Unison Research Giro (approx £2.5k) is stunning IMO and barely talked about.

I also love the Thorens TD160HD, and some of the older Thorens decks can be fabulous turntables, beautifully engineered and available at the snip of the price of an LP12.

The LP12 is wonderful - a very musical sounding deck - but there are many others.

Interestingly I had a Michell TecnoDec with a Sumiko Evo Blue Point Special for a while and didn't get on with it. Very sterile.

Which is a shame really as basicaly its a Clearaudio Performance ( Clearaudio make the giro) with a bit of input regarding the engineering and styling from unison. Although for obvious reasons Unison want folk to think its their baby

Im no expert but Ive listened to alsorts at shows, dealers and at home, Ive had various TTs , even a Thorens TD280mk 4 bought as NOS which I fitted a 2m Blue, even my dealer who fitted the cart was amazed how it sounded esp as this TT gets so much bad press.

My current TT is the Inspire Eclipse SE/ RB1000 with my old 2m Blue bought as ex demo.

Its stunning... thats all I can say

Put on some vinyl, glass of brandy and Im away.......ahhhhhhhhh

last year I sold my beloved 25year old Logic DM101(mk2) Helius VDH silver wired Aurus 2 arm, Goldring Eroica 2 cartridge turntable set up which used to be fed into a 20year old Sondex DE1 phono cartridge premp and it sounded wonderful, especially into my 30+ year old Meridian amps that I still use today(i needed the space)

I remember at the time auditioning it against a Linn Sondek,Rock & Pink Triangle and out of the 3 the Logic sounded better to my ears especially in the bass.

I really do miss the Logic DM101 , but due to space constraints I had to get rid of all my vinyl as well. I do still really miss the sound and space that the Logic produced.

The turntable that made the biggest impression on me the Michell Orbe, which I heard at a show in Buxton, soon after it was launched. It sounded fantastic, and made me realise there was life beyond Linn. Never got one though, as I was too poor!

Of the turntables I have owned my favourites were the Rega Planar 3, with the S-shaped arm, and my current turntable, a Technics SL-1210-II.

Both of these gave me the most fun from my LPs.

Charlie Jefferson:shooter69:If i didn't say the VPI SSM it would be criminal.

I've not even heard one, yet, and I agree!

Just seen this!!!

What was that enormous turntable system the Absolute Sounds guys used to demonstrate in the 1980s? It had a massive frame, like its own equipment stand, the platter was about two inches deep, and it had a huge clamp too. It was all finished in black if I recall correctly. I think that was the best I ever heard.

[Come to think of it, was that a studio version of the Oracle, or am I getting mixed up?]

Most memorable was my first experience of moving-coil cartridges, in the guise of the early Linn/Grace/Supex set ups, around 1975 I guess.

Personal favourites were the belt driven Dual turntables, for ease of use and great sound - for the money.

More recently, the various Linn incarnations got better, but maybe more clinical, converging with CD sound to some extent (in terms of balance, not timing).

And at the Bristol Show at the weekend, the one the AudioNote team were using sounded great to me.
