Hi

Just wanted to ask the experts if i am getting the best sound from my Home Cinema.

My AV is a Onkyo SR605 Blu rays played through PS3.

HDMI cable used for picture and sound is via Optical Cable.

Now when i play a Blu ray the Amp automaticly switches to Dolby Digital (little red icon appears on the LED screen onthe AMP). Now this does sound very good when watching a film. But there are options o the AMP that states TRUE HD and PURE AUDIO. If these are selected i dont think it sounds as good.

Does anyone have this AMP? Any suggestions on improving the sound?

thanks

Agreed. Go with HDMI for audio as well. By the way, which PS3 model is it? If PS3 fat, it can't bitstream audio to your receiver. The PS3 will decode HD codecs as well, but that little red icon on your amp will not light up, as it has received already processed sound from the PS3. The light will come on only when your amp does the job. PS3 slim can bitstream audio as well.

Hi

yes it is the fat PS3, Is this no good then??

Forgive my thickness here i'm normally ok at setting up but seem to be having problems. The current set up is as follows

Sky - HDMI to TV (picture) Optical to AMP (sound)

PS3 - HDM to TV (picture) Optical to AMP (sound)

How to i connect the PS3 to the AMP with HDMI for both?

The AMP has 2 HDMI IN and 1 Out sockets, Will i need another HDMI cable?

Cheers for any help.

Hi EnglishBull, You can try disconnecting the optical cable from the PS3 jus send the sound to the amp via the Hdmi cable. Of course ensure you set the PS3 sound setting to output audio via hdmi instead of optical. See if you prefer the sound this way but as BB said the PS3 fat will decode the HD soundtrack internally. Let us know how you get on. Cheers

Hi

well changed the optical for HDMI and changed the settings, Stuck a Blu ray on to see how it sounded. In short not good,Sound was not good didn't really seem to be coming from rear speakers and talking was coming from both front speakers rather than centre. No real bass from the sub either.

Any ideas why this is?

Do i need to change something on the PS3, i see when setting HDMI as output there a quite a few options on sound to choose from i.e a lot PCM boxes to tick.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Hi Englishbull, have you thought about adding a blu-ray player?would be a lot simpler, not saying the picture would be much(if any)better but it would be quieter and loading times faster.A decent bdp could be had for less than £100 :)

Also the Fat PS3 is not like the Slim where you have HD audio. The AMP will only see it as PCM even in bitstream mode. Get a Bluray player.

While the ps3 is a good machine a standalone player will always win.

for £300 consider the BDT500 and Pioneer 450. The new range of budget players have come on in leaps and bounds. They now compete with the £500 player on bluray playback quite happily
