"Baba O'Riley" - Who's Next - The Who

"Hotel California" - Hotel California - Eagles

"Sympathy For The Devil" - Beggars Banquet - The Rolling Stones

"Respect" - I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You - Aretha Franklin

...and probably many more but that's what I can see at the front of the CD collection from here

kusum65:That key board sound at the start of we wont get fooled again, The Who. Lulls you into a false state of trance and then bursts in with that distorted guitar chord. Lovely

The very beginning of Dance Away when Brian Ferry strikes a match, lights up a cigarette and inhales very deeply, if you listen, you can hear it all.

i'd have these on my list:-

My Dying Bride - Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium, that intro is haunting.

Tesla - Comin' Atcha Live, that one song made my pick up a guitar.

King Diamond - Funeral

honorable mentions to Obituary's Intro on Internal Bleeding and Bathory's A Fine day to die.

"And the meek shall inherit the earth......................

We've taken care of everything,

the words you hear, the songs you sing,

the pictures that give pleasure to your eyes,

it's one for all and all for one,

we work together common sons,

never need to wonder how or why"

Artist = Rush

Album = 2112

I suspect not a popular choice but the intro to the B***hole Surfers album Locust Abortion Technician does it for me.

Daddy?

Yes Son?

What does regret mean?

Well you know son a funny thing about regret is it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

By the way if you see your mum this weekend be sure and tell her SATAN!

Star Turtle by Harry Connick Junior. A departure from his standard crooning. A hellish booming voice followed by almighty drums.

So Addictive by Missy Elliot. usualy RnB ladies singing an "interlude", then she says, "man, bump this pile of sh*t and gimme some funk" and the album explodes into life.

Great thread!

Have to agree with Morrissey ('Now My Heart Is Full') and The Smiths ('The Headmaster Ritual').

As someone has already pointed out, it's odd that the myth of Miserable Moz has grown up in spite of a catalogue of such hilariously arch lyrics. I guess lazy journalism is to blame: “Hey, didn't this guy write a song called 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'? Let's just take that at face value, completely ignoring the fact that it's a pun on the Sandie Shaw track 'Heaven Knows I'm Missing Him Now'...”

Mr Everard's nomination of the “collective intake of breath” that immediately precedes the start of a live orchestral recording is a deliciously evocative image too.

Honourable mentions must go the slowly faded-in intro to 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' that opens Sparks' KIMONO MY HOUSE, and the spoken passage 'Future Legend' at the start of Bowie's DIAMOND DOGS:

"And in the death
As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy thoroughfare
The shutters lifted an inch in Temperance Building
High on Poacher's Hill
And red mutant eyes gazed down on Hunger City
No more big wheels

Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats
And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes
Coveting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers
Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love Me Avenue
Ripping and re-wrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers
Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald
Any day now...the year of the diamond dogs

This ain't rock and roll - this is genocide!"

pleased to see we have a number of smiths fans on here!

have you/will you be buying 'the sound of the smiths'?

i suspect you have their albums anyway but wondered whether you are tempted to get the (johnny marr) remaster versions. i did have a look at the cd in fopp earlier but i am sticking to my guns and hoping they release a complete discography in box set form.

Chris Rea "The road to hell"

Stood still on a highway
I saw a woman
By the side of the road
With a face that I knew like my own
Reflected in my window
Well she walked up to my quarterlight
And she bent down real slow
A fearful pressure paralysed me
In my shadow

She said "Son, what are you doing here?
My fear for you has turned me in my grave"
I said "Mama, I come to the valley of the rich
Myself to sell"
She said "Son, this is the road to Hell"

On your journey 'cross the wilderness
From the desert to the well
You have strayed upon the motorway to Hell

Sheer Class

I would have to go with several nearly all from the 80's.

1. Tubeway Army - Replicas. Me I disconnect from you.

For me that was the start to a whole new sound.

2. Gary Numan - Telekon. This wreckage.

Possibly his best album.

3. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells.

Just so different from anything I had heard at the time and still warrants listening to.

4. Marillion - The thieving magpie. La Gaza Ladra.

One of the best live albums ever and an unexpected piece of classical music that was almost out of place but not quite.

There are plenty more that I need to listen to again as they invoke memories and have real emotional content unlike so much of the modern albums.

Just my opinion though.

Korn - Blind. That bass line. The sudden explosion of guitar. The ferocity of the vocal. As a teen I'd never heard anything like it

I have to say:

"A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today's Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride."
