Hi PINK MOON

For a new AV amp at around £500 Yamaha's RX-V667 has good two channel performance. Anyway i also feel as a package the RX-V667 was more then good enough at its original RRP of £450 however with the recent price change to £350 makes the RX-V667 a bargain imo.

The RX-V667 will also work well with most components.

All the best

By definition, one multichannel receiver under £500 will be the best-sounding in stereo. For my money, it's the Pioneer VSX920.

One must be better than the rest? Im using the denon dm38 just now with MA Br5's (I have the BR LCR on order and BR2's), I cant afford everything I want. I dont have a source to use with it at the moment,, would probably buy a CD player around £300. Could an AV amp in that price bracket better the DM35 excluding source?

Thanks Musicraft and Simon! I had thought of the yamaha, but not the Pioneer. Will definately look into that!

richer sounds recently had a batch of yamaha rxv-765's going for £200, add a yamaha A-S500 for around £300 and your sorted..

So your saying I should use 2 amps,, 1 AV and 1 Stereo? I have wondered this, Guess it just involves changing a few wires every now and again,,or would you just keep the front speakers in the Stereo and Bi amp,, is that possible?

They didnt have any R765's by the way, I have thought of buying an older model of a reciever,, but not having the latest technology does niggle with me (I do plan to go 3D one day)

Hi Simon,, I dug out the October issue and read the Pioneer review, sounds interesting! especially as ive found it for £380 at richer sounds. It does warn of using speakers that are too lively with the treble frequencies, How would the MA BR speakers fit into this? from memory I think im right in saying the BR LCR was the weak link of the package.

you can connect the stereo amp to the preouts of the avr (assuming it has pre-outs) , theres no switching of wires at all, you just select stereo on the avr, and press the cd input on the stereo amp, for stereo music through your fronts..

or select aux, or something similar on the stereo amp (whatever input is connected to the avr) and 5.1 on the avr for movies..

if 3d interests you there is always the option of getting a 3d blu-ray player with analogue outs, panasonic and samsung make such players, then just connect your avr using them.. you'll be able to get hd audio with 3d blu-rays..

I have always found the Marantz AV equipment to be Good in Stereo, Keep an eye out for some slightly older models and have a listen.

Hey Pink Moon,

I picked up the 667 from RS this week and its very good! Because Im am equally interested in home cinema as well as quality stereo I opted for the 667 after demo'ing both the VSX-920, SR -608, 1911 and the Vx-R667 AND the 667 is superior when it comes to music.

I guess it depends on what your preference in music is, but considering Yamaha have an 80% market share in the music industry in terms of instruments, amps and other high end equipment used by proffesional musicians, you would question their motifs if they didnt incorporate some of this technology in to a piece of equipment that is intended to be an all-rounder! And in my opinon they have

But, demo'ing is always the best way forward

However, the price drop of the Yamaha isnt going to last

So if youre gonna make a decision, Id make it before the end of the month

Hi Marty Moose, I think you might have a point there! plus its the cheapest. Basically I've lived a very sheltered life when it comes to any sort of High Fadelity Sound, so I think I'll manage with whatever I buy and be pretty happy. I like Max Flinns idea of adding a dedicated stereo amp and may well look at the yamaha a-s500 at a latter date, when it may have dropped in price, and drive my front speakers with that.

Hello,

Listened at length in stereo to a number of amps in this price range, with a pair o KEF 6005s and a PV1 sub. This included the Pioneer 920, a Yamaha 565.

The 920 was detailed but for me had a softer bass not that well controlled. The 565 had a laid back and full sound but the bass was boomy.

The Denon 1911 had the detail but also great control, impact, and texture in the bass. This has been good for me teamed with a Sonos, but I have previously had Marantz amps and the NR1601 would be worth a listen.

I'd definitely get some demos, as people seem to prefer the sound of different amps, especially for music, as evidenced by this thread.
