Hi

I have just bought a Sony bdp s570 and I've connected it with an HDMI cable directly to the tv.

However I have a BIG problem....

The scene is:
My pvr is recording something from the tv and I want to watch a blu ray.

When the blu ray player is on and I change the channel to HDMI my pvr stops recording. It says it is recording but when I try to watch the programme back it cuts off from the time I changed the channel to HDMI and then resumes from the time that the blu ray player was switched off.

My pvr is connected via a scart and an aerial lead directly to the tv. It seems that when I change the channel to HDMI with the blu ray player switched on, the signal to the pvr is switched off.

My tv is a Sony KDL-40S5500 and my pvr is an old Daewoo DSD9502T.

Has anyone heard of this before? If so PLEASE can you help?

sounds like a sony bravia link problem. The Blu-ray and probably your tv can send basic commands over HDMI.

There is an option to turn it off in the crossbar menu.

I had a similar problem until I turned it off - as it's on by default. Sorry cant remember whet it's called...

Thanks for your reply Mark. So there is hope yet....?

What am I looking to turn off in the crossbar to get this problem solved?

There was a firmware update "to improve HDMI connectivity" that came out mid-September for teh 470 and 570.

I did a first-time update yesterday, so that mid September one should be included.

I think this problem runs deeper.

The pvr isn't connected to the blu ray player so I can't understand why the devices are conflicting.

I have not seen the setup menus etc. of your pvr or TV before, but it sounds to me like a scart control issue, it sounds like the tv is sending a signal down the scart lead to say it's not using this input any more, so the pvr is stopping what it is doing.

I know the sky pvrs have an option for scart control, which you can turn off, it might be worth looking to see if yours has this option, and then just try turning it off.

Don't know if this helps but might be worth a try.

the Bravia sync option is in SYSTEM SETTINGS>CONTROL FOR HDMI>OFF (DEFAULT IS ON)

As Mark suggest it may be a SCART prob - I was thinking the PVR was using HDMI. Is the PVR set to record theTV tuner, or its built-in one? Assuming you have an ariel in the PVR and not the TV, you must be recording the PVR tuner, if you cant find a SCART 'contol' setting in your pvr/tv , try disconnecting pin 8 on your scart (either end) - dont worry, it does not carry any picture or sound info

Thanks for these tips. I will give these a go when I get home.

I'm not sure if I have a scart control option on my pvr but I suppose I've never looked for it before so it could be there somewhere.

Yes my pvr is recording from it's own tuner and not the one built in to the tv.

What does pin 8 do?

The more I think (and read) about this the more I think Markyd has hit the nail on the head. I am pretty sure it's to do with Sony's control for HDMI feature.

I will check to see if my TV is set to 'on' and the blu ray is set to 'off' or vice versa. Either way I think they will both need to be set to 'off' and hopefully that will sort it out.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'll report back to let you know how I got on.

Hi

Just to let you know that the control for HDMI feature didn't make any difference. It is now switched to 'off' on both the tv and the blu ray player and I've still got the same problem.

After playing around with this a bit I have also noticed that when I switch the blu ray player on, my pvr struggles to get a signal and 9 times out of 10 it crashes (and this is before I've changed the channel to HDMI). So it seems that the blu ray player being switched on is the problem.

My pvr does not have a scart control setting in it's menu.

I have never heard of anyone having this problem before. Any other suggestions? Please?

For anyone who's interested I finally got this problem sorted.

The problem was.... wait for it....

A cheap HDMI cable!

I read online that someone else had the same problem with their pvr once they connected up a blu ray player and they solved it by getting a higher quality HDMI cable.

I still didn't believe it because I've only ever read everyone saying "there's no point spending a lot of money on a HDMI cable, they're all the same". My original cable was £1.39 from Amazon but after trying everything else I gave it a go.

I went to Asda and bought a new cable for £15 (reduced from £20) and plugged it into my tv and blu ray player. Immediately the difference was noticible. For a start the channel automatically changed over when I turned the blu ray player on (before that I had to do it manually as the control for HDMI feature couldn't find any connected devices), secondly I found that I can now record from the pvr whilst the blu ray player is switched on!

I turned on the player and then changed the channel back to AVI to see the pvr broadcast. It was a little bit jumpy but after I waved the HDMI cable around a bit it sorted itself out and now all is well and good.

Now we know.
