Just taken delivery of the above. I have hooked it up via hdmi to my lx82. What settings should i set the player to for optimum sound?? Should i let the amp do the decoding?? I would like to use the pqls feature but sadly been unable to get it to work, well the lights on the player and the amp are not coming on!! Can you not choose the audio on br discs like dvd eg dts etc or are you stuck with the audio that the disc has eg dts hd master audio on say the hurt locker? I think the player should be set to pcm??

Any general tips appreciated. Want to watch Robin Hood in full audio splendor tonight!!

Thanks

Aah mate, you got it at last! You can normally choose the audio output although my Pioneer amp usually defaults to he best. Check on the back of the BD box and see what the soundtrack is (TrueHD or DTS-HD). Not having hadthe chance to use PQLS I can't help with that....

Hey John,

Set theBDP to bitstream HD audio, this will let the AVR do the decoding, after all this is what is built for.

Thanks lads. Yep finally got it!! Just wanting to get the very best from it now!! The pqls seems to be a bit of a nightmare!! Tried to get it going last night before i went to bed, after watching hurt locker! It made a real mess of my inputs as you have to have the kuro link on and it just jumbled everything up!! It comes up pcm audio on the amp display until you flick standard on the amp remote then it changed to dtshd masteraudio. Going to have a tweak with it just now back in a bit!! PS It is a beautifully made unit and the sound and picture were great but wanting to make sure i am getting the most from it.

Hi David, Loving it!! I never knew it took sooooo long to load up!! Worth it for the quality though!! I dont think it would be so bad if you didnt have to go back and press enter for the language selection etc if it just booted up and went straight to the main menu.....Just trying to get the most out of it. Going to try and update the pics on the "your system" thread.

Can anyone help with these??

1 Should i just be letting the "wizard" do the initial set up on the 52? or is there some specifics i should be entering to get the best from the 82??

2 I cant seem to get the pqls to work and it screws up my inputs??

3 The Plasma is only hd ready 1080i so should i set the player to this or to 1080p?

4 Also noticed that the bluray was displaying 60Hz is that correct??

5 What should i be outputting through the hdmi for audio??

Seem to be having a few teething probs but generally very pleased!!

Any help with setup would be gratefully received!!

Right better go and buy some more Blu Rays!!

I think you will find that PQLS is for CD's rather than Blu-ray and DVD's. When i occasionally put a cd in mine PQLS automatically kicks in i don't need to change any settings.

I'm not sure if i have it on or not i'll check. I have checked my FD51 and PQLS is set to AUTO.

Kuro link is not a setting as such rather using one remote to control other devises i still tend to use the relevant remote for the relevant devise maybe i'm getting old.

Right i have checked my LX71 Manual and found that Kuro link is HDMI Control function so when you asked me if it messed anything up with Kuro link on i didn't answer it properly. You will need HDMI Control ON for PQLS to work. Did it mess things about sort of but in the menus in HDMI control on the AMP you can turn things off so if i remember correctly the effects it had i didn't like i turned off. I have HDMI Control ON for amp and Blu-ray and it's not messing anything up using it.

I'll quote the relevant information for you from the AMP manual regarding HDMI Control and PQLS.

Heading in Manual HDMI Control

"Only when ON was selected" (for HDMI Control) "Select Auto or off for the PQLS setting."

".AUTO- PQLS is enabled. A precision quartz controller in the receiver eliminates distortion caused by timing errors (jitter) , giving you the best possibe digital-to-analog converstion from audio CD sources when you use the HDMI interface. This is valid as an HDMI function for PQLS-compatible players.

. OFF- PQLS is disabled."

3 The Plasma is only hd ready 1080i so should i set the player to this or to 1080p?

I find it's better to have the player set to auto and it will select what it thinks is the best output from the source given. It's not always 1080p as your other sources TV/AMP may not be able. From blu ray you should get 1080/24p or 1080/50p or 1080/60p depending if your set is 24 frame capable or if you are using PAL (50) or NTSC (60). With your set being 1080i you may only get 1080/50i or 1080/60i. If your set is compatible up to 1080i i don't see the point in using 1080p others may disagree. I have an Australian blu-ray version of Pulp Fiction which is 1080i and honestly when i force a 1080p upscale on the blu-ray player changing from auto i can't see the difference the picture is superb. Unfortunately you will need a new TV to get 1080/24p.

On selecting auto output resolution when you play a disc press output resolution and it will display what the source output is and what the player is currently outputting.

Still cant get the pqls to work. Played my 1st audio cd via hdmi on the 52. The sound i get blows the trusty OLD technics clean out the water though!! Spun Zero 7 Simple Things and it was incredible. Seperation and sheer scale from the low bass notes up to the highs of the female singers notes. Stunning. I never thought i would get such good performance over hdmi. Wont need a dedicated cd player now(for a while) Just had a flick through all the sound modes on the amp... just to see......Neo 6 music proved quite interesting surrounding you in the music.... Not strictly hi fi but still.....Right better get another cd on....how about some Arcade Fire......

John have you got HDMI control ON for your AMP and your player and PQLS settings on AUTO for AMP and player. Once you have done this it should switch to PQLS automatically when you put a CD in. Failing this i can't help i didn't even try to get PQLS to work with mine it just works when you have the above settings.

'PQLS only works while playing CD (see your BR Manual - PQLS set to ON and HDMI Control set to ON) and then only via a PQLS equipped Pioneer BR player. To get the best sound, use Pure Direct in combination with it. PQLS button is on the hand set of the AV Amp but is in the on screen setup section of your BR player.

You can also use Pure Direct with the USB port.'

The above is a quote which relates to the problem you're having, John.
