Hi all, I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on what speakers to get for my Hi-Fi. As i cant demo its making the decicion making very hard and i feel like if i keep going the way i'm going there will probably be new models out by the time i make up my mind lol. I've been looking into the B&W CM7 and M/A RX6 and both seem like very good speakers, was wondering whether anyone has heard them both and could tell me what they thought of each? The B&W's are around a 1000 dollars more expensive here in Australia so really they should be the better speaker but i'm sure thats not always the case. Anyway the best way i can describe the sound i want would be minimal heavyness in trebles, transparent and detailed mid range, tight deep well placed bass and generally the more natural sounding of the 2 i like a bit of warmth (which you probably cant avoid at this price point) but more for detail. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Josh [🙂]

That may be possible, but then if I'm not happy with them they would have to order in the other pair for me to try. The Hi-Fi shop is pretty small and dont really get a lot of stock in so thats why its hard to demo, if they had them in stock it wouldnt be a prob. They tend to order in a lot of style type speakers which is unfortunate, guess thats what most people are after here. I'm in the market to get the best sound i can for my money, i dont really care what they look like.

Hi Josh

I have the M/A RX6's now with the NAD C355BEE amp and it's a superb combo

I did also demo the B&W CM7's with the NAD as well as the Naim Nait 5i amp and CDP (that combo didnt do very well at all).

The B&W CM7's are superb speakers but IMO it depends on what music you generally listen to and also placement.

The CM7's are rear ported which means they need a good biut of room behind them to allow them to breathe properly. The RX6's do have a rear port as well but as they are front ported too their placement isnt as finicky.

I agree with PP that you could do to demo as they're both very good speakers and will sound diffeent.

If I had to buy blind my money would be on the RX6's though. Not being biased as I've got them; my parent-in-laws have the CM7's with a Cyrus set-up and they sound brilliant but they listen to a lot of motown etc so the CM7's really suit their music tastes.

I would still go down the home dem route. If you don't like the model, let them order the speakers in - you're the customer, after all! and given the outlets in Oz are patchy they should be geared up for this very scenario.

As dan said, RX6 would be the first on my list...

Good luck.

Hi Dan, I think i'm going to have to say to my dealer that i need to hear them both or NO SALE! I am leaning towards the M/As at the moment as they are cheaper, seem to have better reviews, more convenient as you said they dont need to be as far from a wall as the CM-7s and I've been told the CM-7s can sound a bit loose unless they have heaps of power behind them. I listen to a lot of older music such as Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Don Mclean, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nirvana etc. Going on the music i listen too Which speakers do you IYO think will suit me best?

Thanks PP, yeah i dont think my mind will be at ease on the matter untill i hear them both, if i dont it will just make me wonder whether the ones i didnt choose could have been better for me. Its demo or no sale

With your taste in music (as I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd, Metallica, AC/DC, Dio, Judas Priest as well as a lot of modern electronica) I'd say that the M/A RX6's are the safest bet

If you can then yes, DEMO but I thionk you'd do right in buying the M/A RX6's.

On the flipside though; if you can, get a listen to some QUAD 22L2's as I demo'd these a lot as well and thought they were superb!

Thanks Dan will be organising a demo of the M/A RX6s ASAP!

also was wondering whether you heard the RX8s while you were shopping? The reason I didnt mention them is i was thinking they would probably be a bit too bassy for my taste but would be interested to hear your thoughts on them if you had a listen to them?

Very wise...

I would never buy a component without a thorough dem, because I have a simple philosophy: apart from a house and a car, the hi-fi or AV system is probably the most expensive entity an average person will buy throughout their life. Given the fact you can spend thousands on upgrade during a lifetime, it'll be like bunging money down the drain...

...hence that's why I'm an old fusspot

Yes I did hear the RX8's but in all honest the extra lay-out money wise isnt worth it IMO

They're a bit too bassy/boomy and to get the best out of them I'd say they need to be bi-amped as well to control their soundstage!

For mucic you'll not beat the M/A RX6's

Thanks Dan, thought that would be the case. Thanks guys will let you know how i go with the demoing
