How large are the differences in either the 685 and cm5 or the 685 s2 and the cm5 s2 is the price difference worth it?

The 685 S1s were a great speaker (I had a pair) and B&W self-admitted they were the best value standmounts in all their ranges. If reviews are to go by the 685 S2 is a no-brainer. Save the money over the CM5 and get a really good stand - B&W's own were good.

well I like the CM5, but there are better speakers out there in their price range if purchasing new. but if you have the option of choosing between 685 new or used CM5, the CM5 are better imo. They do need an amp with good current and with an open kind of sound (not harsh, but a bit brighter then neutral) since they're warm, smooth speakers. They got great bass as well (with a minor upper bass hump that appears on occasion, which warms the sound and makes the bass sound bigger), and very pretty looks imo.
