Sorry to hear that they were faulty. Don't let that put you off trying actives altogether though. Faults are rare and you were just unlucky.
Have you considered trying another pair of DM5s? Or maybe consider the new Acoustic Energy AE1 active speakers? They're similar to the DM5s being high quality compact £1000 active speakers with a 5.25" woofer. Like the DM5s they also look smart with speaker grills and wood veneers. The AE1s are a little bit bigger than the DM5s too so they'll probably have a bit more bass.
