hi just wondering, i have a cambridge audio 540R av receiver, and i was wondering if it was possible to feed the digital signal into the av receiver (via spdif coaxial) and then pass it out of the receiver as analogue via dual phono leads, so that they can be connected to a headphone amp

thanks

well i connected the tape out ports on the receiver to some earphones (dont have the headamp yet) and i couldnt hear anything i also tried connecting them to a guitar amp and i still heard nothing,

any ideas?

Nothing in the manual to suggest it won't work - did you have the tape button pressed? If so, there would be no output. You should select the source input to which the source component is connected, and then that signal should be available at the tape output.

yer i had the phono RCA leads connected to the tape rec output, and the source on DVD (the source that the PC is connected to)

connected some earphones to the phono cables and no sound in the earphones,

this is quite anoying

yer it is and i can the sound from the pc coming out of the loudspeakers connected to the av receiver but sound coming out of the tape rec

Did you connect the headphones to the rec-out without using a headphone amp?? If you somehow manage that then it wont work hehe.

You just plug your headpones into the headphone jack on the front of your reciever. Usually that should disconnect your speakers and only send sound from the selected source into the headphones.

i know i can use the headphone out on the receiver but i dont want to use the intergated amp i want to use a dedicated headphone amp i just connected some cheapo earphone to the tape rec out to see if there was any sound actually coming out of the tape rec ports

p.s. i also tried conected the rec out to a all in one hifi via audio in and still no sound.

yer just tried the coaxial in the CD input and still nothing from the tape rec

Then perhaps on this receiver the analogue record out only works from analogue sources, and the digital record out from the digital ones. I'd suggest a call to Cambridge Audio to clarify.

i think i tried this once allready, but i asume connecting the phono leads to the 6.1 preamp out wouldn't work

Might do: worth a shot, though of course the level will be affected by the receiver's volume control, and you'll have to disconnect the speakers.

lol i just tried it and it worked it actually says

The Record outputs on Cambridge Audio AV Recievers will only output a
signal in the same format it is recieved in. If an input is digital
(optical or coaxial), this will only be outputted by the digital
outputs, and if a source is analogue, this will only be outputted from
the analogue outputs.

On the 640R, the signal sent to the REC 2 output must be selected in the On Screen Display.

The Pre-outputs will output whichever source is currently selected, irrespective of whether this is analogue or digital.

on the website lol, btw if i turned the receiver volume right down so that the speakers wernt audible, i should then be able to amplify the signal to audible levels with the external headamp shouldnt i

No, as this will also turn the level of the preouts right down, and reducing the signal this much and then boosting it back up with a headphone amp is hardly conducive to the best sound quality.

oh ok, well i just thought, if just plug a random speaker cable in to the headphone it will turn the speakers off anyway

btw is there like an optimum level i should have the receiver pre out at? or just like comftorble listening level?
