Problem!! Soon i will be buying my tv and av equipment but not sure what type of stand/rack to put them on.Found and old very sturdy wooden one in the basment but not sure if i should scrap it and go out and but myself a nice glass one. Does anyone know if either material would be better for mounting my gear?

my personal view is - if it's sturdy (i.e. doesn't move), gives enough ventilation and goes with your living room, go for it. I want something that will enclose the a/v kit (to avoid the inevitable 'toast in the bd-player' that's to be expected from the impending child), but keep the centre speaker centred, but not enclosed. It's proving impossible for under a grand...

I know when I was looking, finding a rack deep enough to house my A/V amp was the biggest headache.

Make sure you factor in the depth of the Denon, plus at least a couple of inches for all the connections on the back, before spending your hard earned.

This is exactly the problem I had - which is why I bit the bullet in the end and bought the Salamander AV Geneva 336 - I got it for a "bargain" - some £300 less than what you tend to see it for online - but still the best part of two grand... Aluminium frame with solid walnut casing and doors (child locks to keep three children out!). Optional backs (I've got them up) - see the pictures I've posted...

But I would say solid wood is good, so is glass. It more comes down to personal taste and practicalities in the end...

Im liking that rack looks very plush would need to see what the other shelves are like on either side and see if they are strong enough to hold other av equipment. Looks like you could only fit the dvd and centre speaker i n the middle.

Thanks guys great help.

I think I need to contact them to find out more about the internal shelving, it doesn't say anything about the rear cable access too.

I've also been looking at this:

Interesting thread.

I had a similar problem (and still do to some extent) where finding a rack proved more difficult than deciding which equipment to buy. The problem is, I think, that A/V rack manufacturers expect most customers to own style systems, so generally don't offer racks with enough shelf height/depth to accomodate full sized centre speakers while allowing a receiver room to breathe.

I'm sure if someone produced a cost effective and attractive rack with about 30 cm headroom on the lower shelf and 22 cm on the upper shelf, with a depth of roughly 45 cm, it would sell extremely well.

After extensive searches the best I could come up with for my needs was a relatively tacky glass stand, which just about houses my kit, but I'd love more shelf height (my receiver probably has roughly 4-5 cm space at the top, which is far from ideal). In my quest to resolve my problem I've started contemplating building my own, because, try as I might, I can't find a rack that appeals aesthetically and will house my kit satisfactorily.

It's either that or go the expensive custom design route.

Little help to anyone, I appreciate, just venting my frustrations on the same topic.
