I currently have a Cyrus based set-up using an AV8 as the processor and then MonoX for the amplification. I am very happy with the Cyrus sound and look but I am looking to move to the latest surround formats. What processors are there available for the £1000 to £1500 mark that people can recommend ?

Thanks

I am aware that Rotel make one in the 15XX series but i haven't seen any reviews or know anyone who has one.

Why do you say that they are no longer available ?

Surely there are some of the US makes around ?

There are processors available but not quite at your price point. The Onkyo unit is the closest but they are very thin on the ground. Marantz have the AV8003 which is a bit more and there is a unit from Rotel. Other than those you are into the big bucks for more choice. You could buy something like a Pioneer SC-LX82 and use the pre-outs. Have you got five mono's ?

If you didn't like any of the processors, you could pick up a Yammy DSPZ7 and engage it's 'pre-amplifier' mode. Otherwise, the Onkyo would be fine, as it uses many features you'll find on a DSPZ11.

Hi u415270

You could also consider the NAD T175 AV processor. The T175 is based around NAD's MDC concept (modular design construction) so offers flexibility and is upgradable as new formats emerge.

Btw, the T175 should be a good match with the MonoX's as NAD pre amps drive/grip Cyrus power amps really well.

Thanks

Just read some reviews / issues regarding pops and responsiveness with PS3. Are you aware if these issues are fixed ?

I come past the shop every day so will try and pop in one day this week.

Thanks Andrew,

do you consider the Audiolab superior to the other products mentioned from Rotel, NAD and Marantz ?

Never seen any comparative reivews. I would be looking for sound and video performance rather than DSP features etc.

Just looked up the Audiolab and it doesn't appear to support the latest surround formats which is kind of the reason for changing from the AV8 ! Is there an upgrade out their that covers this ?

Must admit I haven't tested some of the others mentioned, but the Audiolab is very good indeed. Though the fact I have a TMA full-house processor and ten-channel power amp probably helps me to 'get' what the Audiolab is all about...

It handles them all as hi-res multichannel Linear PCM.

Just had a good chat with Musicraft - thanks for your opinions.

Advice from a dealer talking me out of buying some kit....

Anyway he has suggested that I probably won't get much benefit from the new HD sound formats to justify the outlay of replacing my Cyrus AV8. Is that an opinion shared by others ?

I normally audition all my HiFi before buying but Home cinema is particularly difficult with all the different boxes needed !

I have exactly the same issue, I have 5 monos connected with balanced cables and i m looking to replace the av8, I think that AV processing has moved on from the old AV8 so not sure i d agree that there will be no difference. I have emailed Cyrus with exactly this question. However if anyone has advice on a possible replacement please let me know.

Thanks
