The moment will soon be here when I at last upgrade to HD, with a new TV, amp, Blu Ray, PS3 & Sky HD. But looking at my current set up has raised a couple of questions that I need to ask before I get the gear.

The first concerns the number of HDMI's on the amp and whether to go direct to tv or run through the amps switching. Obviously the Blu Ray player should be sent to the amp for HD audio but do you lose any picture quality by not going direct? If I do lose picture quality then i'd prefer to go direct, but do any players have 2 HDMI outputs to send the audio to the amp or would that have to be by 7.1 using the players onboard decoding?

The second is a little more tricky...I currently have a lot of inputs to my Denon 2802, and a number of inputs to my Toshiba 36ZP48 CRT telly (Component, RGB, SVid), but I also run two sources into one input on the amp for a number of things. For instance, when I select DVD on the amp I have the DVD player by coaxial with its picture going by component to the tv AND I have the Xbox by SVid/composite aswell. The amp automatically gives priority to the digital audio and I can just switch the telly to the component input (Ext 4) to watch and listen to DVD's. If we want the XBox then we just power down the DVD player and switch the telly to Ext 3.

What I am getting at here is the upconversion of amps nowadays, should mean I only need one HDMI from amp to tv, so if I had two sources into one, say SVid/Optical & 3 x Composite, would the amp deal with it OK? Would it just prioritise pictures in the way the 2802 prioritises audio?

The main reason for all this is that with possible XBox 360, Wii, PMP's and still a lot of VHS to convert to disc, I may not be able to afford an amp with enough socketry for everything, so it makes sense to share, if it will work OK!

I forgot to mention that I am considering the Dnon 1909 or possibly the Yamaha 863SE
