Audio System Recommendation for Mac Mini

Hi there,

I'm looking to upgrade the audio system on my Mac Mini and I'm rather torn between a couple of different options.

Basically I want to replace my existing (and fairly old) hi-fi and stream my uncompressed (flac) library through my Mac. Up to this point I have still been using CDs when listening to music at higher volumes (I only listen to lossy files on my iPod or quietly through my computer speakers).

To be honest I wasn't entirely sure what would be most suitable and I wasn't looking to spend more than around £350, if it was possible.

I've come to a cross-roads and wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations?

I have found a Bang & Olufson Beosound 8 http://www.bang-olufsen.com/en/sound/sound-systems/beosound-8 for £550 which can be connected to the Mac via USB. Having tested this in store I thought the audio quality seemed excellent, but what I heard was not going through a USB cable.

My alternative would seem to be hooking the Mac up to an Amp via the optical audio out by way of a DAC. I could then connect the amp to the stereo speakers I currently have (these aren't great or new, but I'm happy with the way they sound for the time being and I can always upgrade them at a later date). Could anyone recommend a good amp/ DAC combination that would work with the Mac? I looked at Amps which have built in DACs, but they looked to be quite high end and out of my price range.

Any help would be much appreciated!

After doing a little research, I'm thinking that the Yamaha A-S500 http://www.whathifi.com/node/1060236/talk#comment-2801779 looks like a good bet and it's quite reduced at the moment in Richer Sounds and on Amazon.

Does anyone have any good or bad stories of one?

Also can anyone recommend a DAC that is reasonably priced (preferably no more than £150) which would work well with the A-S500?

Thanks.
