Have I got this right? if I have my itunes library (and other media) stored on NAS it will stream to appletv with the atvflash mod?? or can my library only be hardwired to atv via a HDD?? Ideally I would like to have all my media on NAS and just use atv for temporary storage. Anyone with this set up or experience of atvflash? thanks....

Yes John, very keen to see how your new purchase performs!!! Good man for taking the leap and buying one. Did you get the 40 or 160Gb version?

160 gig. I know you can add external HDDs (though yet to be proven with the atvflash thingie) but at an extra £65 it seemed churlish not to at least make it big enough to hold all my music off its own bat.

I agree. I only have about 12Gb of music, but I know that I'll start using lossless codecs in the future, so I don't want to find I fill it up with that and of course, films which are in another league! But in all honesty, 160Gb should be big enough for the next few years for me. Keep us posted on progress! I'll be away for a week from tomorrow, cycling from Carlisle to John O'Groats, so you'll have no more posts from me till the 21st. Oh the relief! ;-)

Can't get composite video to work, which makes it unusable with the television I want to use it with.
Can't get it to talk to drives on the network (though haven't played around with security yet)
Can't play native DVD files copied directly onto the box (in the absence of it being able to see them on the network)
Can't drop just any old application onto it (so no Spotify), but it does include Firefox (whether it's a version that's been modded specifically I don't know), but that's pretty useless unless you plug in a USB keyboard (which precludes you from plugging in a USB drive to extend its storage)

But apart from that...

Note that this is all atvflash functionality, the apple box itself is working fine,

EDIT - and note that I can still stream spotify to it using airfoil, it acts like an Airport Express in that regard. No remote though.

Suboptimal. I can always get round the composite thing by getting a new telly (though not till tomorrow

), and if the USB attached storage patch works then that'll pretty much do me (Spotify and VOB file disappointment notwithstanding).

Starting to lose the will here...

In theory, apparently you can mount a network drive and access the files on it. In practice, however;

- I can't
- Even if I could, you appear to have to manage playlists manually via another app, you don't get the nice front row interface

So I would be inclined to use the most useful piece of functionality - enabling a USB drive as the primary storage - whack a terabyte drive in the back, and use @TV as intended, by syncing your whole library via iTunes.

DVD playback works now, once I realised you only copy the VIDEO_TS directory, not the AUDIO_TS one as well. But it's in black and white on my proper telly since I can't get composite to work (I can feel a trip to John Lewis coming on). I did this by copying files onto the box itself, rather than streaming (see above, and I'd be wary of streaming video anyway) - I can't confirm without having tried the USB drive hack yet whether these end up on the @TV drive or the external one. The faff involved is making me consider whether or not to convert those movies I want on the box to DivX (?) and manage them via iTunes as well, since it's only to give the kids films to watch without them trashing the (owned) disc.

The web browsers (the built in one's called Couch Surfer I think and the Firefox I added later) appear to work but are currently next to useless as I have no keyboard and mouse attached. I haven't yet attempted to use my iPod Touch and remotetap or suchlike to control it, though I may after I've spent some time with it.

So in summary: not sure the atvflash thingie is worth $50, bearing in mind:

- I can't get some of the key stuff to work
- In practice, some of that key stuff (eg streaming from network drive) would be impractical day-to-day
- the ability to add applications (in particular Spotify nnnggghhh) appears limited
- all of these hacks are available free if you can be bothered to find them and can be bothered to work out how to install them (non-trivial from cursory investigation)

This is all based on just a few hours of play though, I'll keep it (there's a 15-day money back guarantee on atvflash) and work with it to see if I can coax it into a manageable solution. If I can get the external USB drive working, then I'll do precisely what I suggest further up, and just use it as it was intended, but with a drive in the back to provide monster storage (and wait for Apple to provide that update themselves, at which point I'd revert to original firmware I think).

Thanks JD -great overview, i cant help thinking there is a NAS hack out there somewhere. Anyway going to get the atv, atvflash and some lacie storage this week.

If you make any further breakthroughs, please keep em posted.....

Oh there is - in theory you can just enter the network details of your NAS and play media from there - but as I say, as far as I can tell you're stuck with entering playlists etc manually, rather than pick them up from iTunes.

The advantage of course is that atvflash opens up the OS, so any further advancements will be easy for you to add. And if you can add the lacie hard drive as the primary storage, you then have a terabyte Apple TV...

BTW, just got a new telly so can give some better idea of how DVDs look...
