Attenuators - where have you put them?

just noticied on Rothwells website that it says if you have a pre power amp setup they are best being placed between the pre and power amp - currently have my goldenjacks before the pre amp so i am going to try swapping them round tomorrow to see if i can tell any difference!

My Rothwell's are on the input of the amp. I think I read it's better to do it this way, rather than on the output of the CD player.

Nothing stopping me swapping them over to see if there's a difference mind. I guess you'd want the extra voltage to travel the length of the interconnect though to minimise losses, however small they might be.

I have mine on the amp input end. The theory goes something like.... you will have a full power signal right down to the amp and so will be less likely to be changed by external influences. Whether you could hear the difference either way round is another matter. I haven't tried so can't comment.

just swapped them to be after the pre amp but just before the power amps and results the same but what i would say is that they do seem to have removed some of the low level hum noise my current system seems to have in herited - reduce the noise floor - going to give a little while then swap back

ok, not knowing much about electronics i might be risking sounding a bit silly here, but....................

I thought the whole point of using attenuators was to reduce the signal entering the amp from a device such as a cd player - as the output from a cd player is often too high for the inputs on an amp (pre amp or intergrated) resulting in possible damage to the inputs and poor control of the amps volume control.

surely placing the attenuators in between the pre and power amp is.....um.......pointless? if you want to reduce the signal to the power amp why do you not just use the volume control on the pre-amp? is a volume control not just a form of an attenuator anyway?

please correct me if i'm wrong here!
