My dad (being a cheapskate) is looking for a radio sub 50.00 which will offer good reception in his work place but he and I weren't sure if that is possible as the factory he works in has metal walls.
Well, given that my phone went off when several meters down in a submarine off the coast of Korea the other week - under water, and inside metal walls - I think you should be OK.

I think metal walls + metal ceiling & floor = Faraday cage. Does not sound ideal. (Unless you have the special MI6 phone that Andrew has connected to the Navy's underwater network)

Nah - standard elderly SonyEric V600i in a tourist sub.
And I think metal walls + metal ceiling & floor = shipping container.
