Are HDMI switches all equal?

I have moved house and the Tv will now be 8m from my v equipment. I wish to run cable before installing the floor and severalruns of hdmi cable look expensive (current equipment Arcam dv139, Sky HD, PS3 ). I wondered if a better way may be using an hdmi switch and this will enable additional hdmi sockets for the future (at least a 4:1 switch) and a single long run to the plasma.

I have surfed the net and found a myriad of switches from Octava, Chord, QED, Meridian etc... and wonder if anyone has compared them. At the end of the day I would prefer the purest signal from my sources to reach the Tv without reduction in quality over the long run.

Advice would be appreciated.

My 2 penneth would be to at least go for one that offers automatic switching.

p.s I have an Octava 4:1 and I haven't noticed any degradation in signal/pq .
