Am I right in thinking that the avr850 has something like class g amplification but the 860 doesn't or something similar, it's a while since I read about the two? What difference would this make? Thanks.

And which amp for home cinema av is better the Pioneer sc-lx90 Susano amp, the Pioneer sc-lx901 amp or the Arcam av850 amp or the Arcam 860 amp? Only interested in 5.1 sound. Cheers!

is a av processor/pre-amp and so has no amplification built in.

Now between the Arcam avr850 versus the Pioneer sc-lx901?

Reading reviews and bits I have decided to keep my Pioneer sc-lx81. Thanks.

Arcam or Pioneer amps before, imo I would go for the Pioneer just on the basis that it should work with a wider range of speakers at lower price levels, I think the Arcam would only give it's best when partnered with high end speakers costing at least twice the cost of the amp.

But then again I may be wrong.

That is sort of what I decided too and there was just too many controls on the Arcam.

All though it will work with any power amp.

I believe the 860 has RCA outs so any power amp(S) with RCA ins should work. For 5.1 I would have looked at something by Emotiva, but assuming you're not trying to fill the Albert Hall a regular one box receiver would be your best bet. With front preamp outs to feed into your stereo if you so wished.

I would only go for the 901 If you were considering going down the Atmos route with ceiling speakers- which I guess you are not.
There is a Susano on eBay now- I'd have been interested if I hadn't just bought an 88, but it's dated in terms of features now.

Yep, I am watching the Susano but to be honest I don't trust the secondhand market. I am only interested in 5.1 though. If a shop had it I would probably buy it now.

Unless you have an angst for something other than the usual Pionkyo / Denantz / Yama-haha options why not go for an older high end 7.1 receiver model off the internerd or an ex-display model from last year?

I say 7.1 because 5.1 models are virtually impossible to find these days. Well, at least in the 2016-17 lineups anyway.

If money's buring a hole in your pocket, there are alternatives available from off the beaten path brands too.

Mainstream, I would go for the Marantz 5011 or its Denon equivalent, use the front left and right pre-amp outs to feed into your "proper stereo" leaving oodles of internal power amp capacity for the surrounds.

You might be better off going for a more modern av receiver that passes through 4K to your LG E6 TV.

The Arcam AVR850 is over twice the price of the Pioneer SC-LX901 and has less amplifier channels, (Although in your case the extra channels appear to be overkill) so you have to be an enthusiast to go for it. I would look at the AVR550 which has all the features of the AVR850 but has A/B amplification instead of Class G, and a little less power, but is a similar price to the Pioneer.

The beauty of the Arcam is that it has Dirac Live room/speaker optimisation, which puts the competition to shame, (Exception are the Anthem Receivers which also have top notch room/speaker optimisation (Although a little behind Dirac Live) in fact, it is that good, you could have 3 different manufactures speakers across the front, and once optimised with Dirac Live, they would sound seamless, so you don’t need top notch speakers to get a great sound, but if you do, then it takes you to a whole new level. (Dirac Live is true pro system (And is used in professional installations) not a consumer based system like most of the others)

Hope this helps

Thanks guys! I don't know with amps, I thought mine had a fault the other night which got me thinking about them again, but it wasn't a fault just that I had turned my TV off first instead of the amp and 2 lights kept on. Soon turned itself off when I put my TV back on. I suppose I would go for the Pioneer again like BB says, it makes the most sense. Perhaps if they produce something special in the next few years I will buy it but otherwise I will wait until mine breaks. My amp and speakers are still in brand new condition though despite being over 9 years old (I think).

Looks like I could go another 9 years with it! Still haven't paid for my TV expenses though. I am a big fan of music BB, most of the Blu rays and DVDs I watch are music ones. I do think the Pioneer does a fine job with it too but not sure about the current Pioneer sc-lx901, I still haven't read a review yet. Any ideas when you guys at WHF might get it in? I see you review the 701 but only gave it 4 stars, and describe it as rather muscular, which to me sounds like it could be the Onkyo sound to it being made by Onkyo.

The Arcam sound too complicated to setup and I would probably get someone like Frank Harvey to do the installation as part of the price to buy it. I don't know how my installation guy would get on with it.

Still keep looking at this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pioneer-SC-LX90-Susano-10-2-Channel-Receiver-/332096825774?hash=item4d528369ae:g:uK8AAOSwt5hYfOBo

Have decided against it though and come up with this plan instead when my amp packs up:

Get the equivalent of the Pioneer sc-lx901 in the future and get some more B&W speakers like these ones:

https://www.ortonsaudiovisual.com/index.php/speakers/speakers-462/in-wall-speakers/b-w-cwm-cinema-7-in-wall-speaker-single.html

And do Dolby Atmos and DTS X and what ever soundtracks they may decide to do in the future. Good idea or bad? I will be using my PFM's too but adding these ones in the wall.

You don't seem to understand that Atmos and DTS X soundtracks require ceiling speakers, or at least upfiring speakers that bounce the sound off the ceiling (probably won't work as well). You could possibly get away with mounting some speakers very high on the wall and angling them down to the listening position for your overhead/effects, but it wouldn't be ideal.
