I'm keen on streaming movies once in a while.

Do I get one of these? Or a BDP with LoveFilm?

I use an Airport Express and Airtunes already so I'd want it to complement that rather than interfere with it.

Thoughts?

From what I can see the Apple will let me buy a movie every so often for £3 or £4. LF will cost me £10 a month for unlimited.

I would probably, in an average month, rent 2 or 3 movies. However, if it works well it could increase, broadband connection permitting.

If you want to stream movies on a whim, get Apple TV. They have HD movies (lovefilm do not), and the selection is 100 times better.

Further, if location permits, the @TV would replace your airport rather than interfere with it.

Would it still allow me to stream music from my laptop into the CDP? ie Spotify or radio through Airtunes.

Beware of Apple's marketing with their 'HD' streaming.

The lousy bitrate means u are lucky if u end up getting the equivalent of DVD quality.

The days of proper HD quality downloads - as in something near blu-ray quality are still years away. Still better to rent/buy the disc, and cheaper too.

Not my experience, but hey.

Apple TV and a Blu Ray player are not mutually exclusive of course if you want ultimate quality, but if you just want to pay to watch a film every once in a while, I say again - it's much better than the lovefilm app, both in quality and choice. An alternative would be Virgin or Sky's HD services, of course...

I agree the HD quality is as good as a good quality DVD that you can buy at current times

and yes it works out more expensive to rent from your nearest blockbusters , but you can choose what ever you want to watch without having found its already rented . Add the costs of getting to you'r local blockbusters then i would say its pretty equal on costs

If you are a big movie junkie then places like lovefilm are always a good option but i've found at times you end up with films your just not in the mood to watch

Not to mention the new apple tv can stream music, photo's , movies , internet radio and you tube with ease

I think people are getting all the internet tv and HD broadcasted content a little mixed up , it will never happen that internet tv will be the same picture quality as HD broadcasting as by the time broadband speeds have caught up blu ray and HD broadcasting will have moved on .

Its only if or when internet content takes over the quality will excepted as true HD

Whereas I say it's better.

And lovefilm is a great option if you want discs, yes, but their app (on Sony TVs and BD players for example) dosn't have a very good selection (as I keep saying). Most watched film this week: The Unforgiven (1992).

I had a look through the movie library for the PS3 and its well up to date . really thinking about it the PS3 is an awesome multi media system with the added bonus of games now in 3D and the new movement system

For someone who likes taking discs out of their cases and all that hassle ;) I would suggest a BD player and subscribe to Lovefilm. Cheaper, better quality and lots of disc changing!!

I was a LoveFilm subscriber, but what you fancy watching one day isn't what you necessarily fancy watching when it arrives. I want to be able to choose a movie and watch it there and then.

On your other point, although I don't mind changing disks, it's not something I particularly love doing. I don't buy movies either except for kids films which to be honest I can get on DVD much cheaper. I'm nowhere near as picky about TVs as I am about hifi, for instance I've sold a couple of expensive cables that were being used on my DVD player and am now using cheapies. I would never do that on the music side.

I'm surprised you can post at all with a rich text editor. I can turn it off if you like?

Does the BDP have to be silver then? Because silver is *so* last year, BDP-wise (in fact I can only think of the Denons...)

If turning it off helps me post, then yes, whatever rich text editor is.

Yes it has to be silver as per all my other kit and it has to have movie streaming. No, I can't think of one either except for a very expensive Sony.

I just got back from a trip to the US with an Old 160Gb AppleTV cost just over £100, intend using it as a music server in the front room, It is set up I moved the Express to the dining room and can stream both from the PC or From the TV to the Express if I want, great little set-up. I don't rent movies but have ripped a couple of the Kid's DVD's out of curiosity and they look pretty good played back from there.

I have a question.. i currently have the old apple TV which i love but according to reviews it only handles the 720p hd at 24 frames per second.

they are pushing the new apple tv and saying it's still 720P but handles it at 30 frames per second.

is this a massive difference in quality? is it worth upgrading from the original?

Well it should in theory handle the picture motion a little better , with the old apple tv panning across the screen you can see some motion judder on some films , normally the sd content the hd content doesn't seem to be as bad .

But saying that its not that bad . if it was me i would wait a little just to see how things pan out with the new apple tv , you know what apple are like with new products and glitches and if you'r like me with a low broadband speed keeping the older apple tv is the best idea

I was told the old 160GB TV can be had for £150 in the apple stores if you can find one because there was apparently a surgen in demand for the old one when they released the detail of the new one.
