Apple said: "We believe regulation that forces conformity across the type of connector built into all smartphones stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, and would harm consumers in Europe and the economy as a whole."

Steadily evolving, backwards compatible USB, has been the standard for connecting PC peripherals for a very long time now and still much innovation going on.

Apple's only concern is a possible threat to their bottom line.

Absolutely. How can an industry standard connector possibly stifle innovation? Apple customers should be happy if this proposal goes through. Although I'm sure plenty of fanboys will be fuming.
