Greetings, I've just heard UFO has come out on cds . In my record buying years I never had any of their albums or even heard them. For fans, which cds would you recommend? Cheers

Great band, good classic rock and had a fine lineup - I really enjoyed their 1974-1980 period, so I'd point you towards the "Obsession" album from 1978 which had some great tracks on it and the next one out, "No Place To Run" which had the charting "Young Blood" (memories of a red vinyl 7" single with that one) and the brilliant Mystery Train which took the old 50s/Elvis number and piled on the power.

They lasted for a year or two beyond that but Michael Schenker and Pete Way left around 1983 to form their own groups (Michael Schenker Group - MSG and a shortlived outfit, Waysted, the former enjoying far more success than the latter). The band continued on with singer Phil Mogg at the helm of an ever changing lineup. Great band and one of the first bands I got into at the time.

I'm surprised they hadn't been released on CD years ago.

There's a Best Of: Gold Collection
here

Lower down in that page are 'Lights Out' and 'Strangers In The Night', both of which I have on vinyl.

Strangers In The Night was a double live album.

Both are fairly solid Brit blues based rock. Sort of melody heavy mid 80's heavy rock.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the band. Maybe 25 years ago I was. I still think they're amongst the best exponents of the genre at the time. Funny how little recognition they got.

They have also reformed, got a new album out at the end of May and are touring the UK in June. Original line up too, except for Pete Way who has liver disease.... not surprising really!

The ultimate UFO album is Strangers In The Night - live in the States with Schenker in his pomp, a clearly wasted Phil Mogg, and a version of Lights Out that not even Waxed have bettered...

Good Album, I like the plug JD

Not really familiar with the band but I did like the Gerry Anderson series as a kiddie. I still have some of the Dinky toys in the loft.

gwynne61:Get the remastered Strangers in the night, extra tracks and original gig running order. Turn up loud!

In fact I have two copies if you'd like one (for free - no trading please JD)

The Dinky toys may be valuable now.

It was also popular for the jumpsuits & short skirts worn by the female cast members (and the blokes - jumpsuits, that is).

Alrighty then,Strangers... it is .Hi fi choice has this as one of the essentials, along with the likes of Van Halen, Led Zepplin and a handful of others. Thanks for your suggestions people.I'll keep my eyes and ears open for some of their studio releases as mentioned.

Hello ukadvocate.

The UFO albums have been out before on cd though they have been recently remastered with new liner notes and cd wise there has never been a better time to buy them. `Strangers In The Night` is indeed a classic and is highly recommended. If you want to have a more comprehensive collection of this great band then you might consider buying some of the groups studio albums to go with the live recording (`Strangers`) Here are my recommendations -

Force It

Phenomenon

No Heavy Petting

Obsession

No Place To Run

The six albums mentioned would set you back £60 though you would have a great UFO collection to show for it! They have made some other albums worth considering but the list above covers the bands classic era.

Is the offer of taking your spare copy still on ? I have a vinyl copy of the album which i bought early 80's (but haven't had a turntable for close to 15 years). I saw UFO a couple of times (Top Rank / Sophia Gardens) in Cardiff.

Also saw MSG in Cardiff (which is another good live album - Live At Budokan). They were the 1st 'rock' act to play in the then, very new and plush St. Davids Hall.
