Hi, Have ruled out DLP and am looking at 2 3D LCD models. The Epson EH-TW5900 (£999) and 6000 (£1350) series.
Looking at Epson's website i can see that the 5900 has apparently got a lower contrast figure, however the 6000 series may be too bright for my living room. Therefore blacks may be diluted anyway. So i was looking at the 5900. However i read a review that says that the 3D on the 5900 has greater crosstalk? Does anybody know what the physical difference is between the 2 models that may effect such performance? Cannot find anything from Epson.
Thanks

Hi cookie monster. the 6000 is slightly brighter and comes with a pair of 3D glasses , good if you want to watch in a slightly brighter room,

However , most reviews i read said you was better of to save the money and go for the 5900.

I have seen the 5900 for £925 new on amazon.

I plumped for a JVC DLA-HD350 in the end, would rather have a slightly better 2d picture and sacrifice the 3d , even though it is a model that is a few years old it had some great reviews.

Let me know how you get on and how it compares to Optomas HD33.

Hi there,

Firstly apologies hijacking this thread. Just got the TW5900 plus 4 sets of glasses. Got a discount for being ex demo so total cost was £1042 which I thought was v/good. Fanatastic projector but as I have 14-day exchange offer, I'm still wondering should I have gone for the TW6000 for a £250 up grade. We use PJ for movies only in a dark room and will use for 3D movies so have connected to a Panasonic DMP-BDT310 3D Blu-ray player. For this reason am I best to keep the the TW5900? Also, unsure what 'cross talk' means can someone expalin? Is this gonna coause me an issue?

What hifi have given both the TW5900 & TW6000 five stars but doesn't really offer any info on the performance details so really hard to judge.

My Epson EH-TW5900 is arriving tomorrow, ?925 from Amazon. Ordered some glasses this morning at ?74. I was swayed by the fact that i do not like an overpowering bright projector so the 5900 made more sense. I too black out the room so not worried about brightness. Do think that too much will dilute blacks, colours too much. One thing i do acknowledge is that tv's/ PJ's etc need to 'run in' to perform at their best. Crosstalk really does depend a lot on the disc transfer, bit like noise on a Blu-Ray film, try as you may you cannot shift it. Crosstalk in its most basic term is a double lined image, like an extra outline to shapes/ characters. Compared to the 'rainbows' i get from DLP tech, crosstalk is nothing to worry about. For me, my main concern with a PJ is motion control, with a bigger image you really notice and my old Panny was fantastic with motion.

In fact one thing i have read is to avoid high brightness to minimise crosstalk. Saving around a 3rd on the price of the 6000 has its appeal too. Will go towards getting more glasses and perhaps a bigger screen. May even have enough left to put towards a new 3D blu ray player too.

While im online, does anybody know how old a child needs to be before they can use stereoscopic glasses? Thanks

Thanks for your response, this really helps and I think I will jsut plump with what I got e.g. TW5900. Thanks for point on run in. As purchase was pre-owned there was 12hr use. Still concerned about the cross-talk as What hifi has reported this (in latest magazine) and I'm sure they must have used a darkened room for testing. But I note your comments about brightness reduces this problem.

In the meantime, I do have a money saving tip! I spoke with the people projector point and they advise me the PanasonicTY-EW3D3ME 3D glasses works perfecly with the Epson TW5900. I bought a pair and they worked brilliantly. The best thing, compared to the Epson glasses is they come in three sizes so very comfy, lighter and USB rechargable and cost less. A no brainer. therefore the four Epson glasses I bought are going back this saves me a further £50 in the deal after replacing with Panny versions.

The panansonic is an awesome Blu-ray player so being a excellent source I hope will get the best out of my projector. Therefore thanks for all your help as think the TW5900 could be a much better choice.

My new EH-TW5900 got delivered yesterday, tried it last night, and all i can say is wow!

I paid only ?925 for this!

First thing is the motion, absolutley perfect with no judder and 100% better than the Optoma i tried. Ok so it is very bright, but once the bulb drops a little it'll be perfect, and i 'only' use a 77" screen, bigger would again minimise the brightness. I was always concerned with blacks and although the 'black bars' above and below a widescreen presenation are lighter than i have seen for a while this doesn't seem to reflect in the image. On T2 for example the greyscale shows all the variations in black and dark grey on Arnies jacket, whilst the sunglasses look deep black. Whites rarely get mentioned, yet when i tried Phanton Menace BD (yes i know!) the white flashes, greys and blacks in 'Duel of the Fates' Darth Maul fight all sit in perfect harmony with no digital noise i could see even in the whitest whites. Colours are subtle rather than bold yet the more i watched the more i prefered the clean, sharp, comfortable image. Turned the auto iris off though, worked ok, but noisy in action.

Yet to try 3D, glasses should arrive this week. Have been looking at reviews for many projectors and all appear to show to a greater or lesser degree of crosstalk. With 3D being more of 'something to play with from time to time', and not everything being available in 3D then any crosstalk is of little concern to me, see it as part of stereoscopic 3D use.

For ?925 this is one great PJ, build quality is fantastic, and it has room to improve further. If i had purchased the 6000 model it would definetly have been too bright, uncomfortable to watch, diluted image. The ?350 price difference isnt bad either.

Just wondering, how are the Panasonic glasses, how much, and where from? also did you get much crosstalk?

Hi there,

I'm glad you're pleased. I must admit the PJ is excellent but I'm not shaking this 'niggle' over the TW6000 and I guess I need to try one to clear up doubts.

You are absolutley right that titles (worth watching) are very limited so I guess how much use will I have for 3D is the question when about 95% of what I watch is blu-ray 2D. That said, this is now and I'm buying with 3-years in mind and 3D titles should be on the increase making me think this feature becomes more important.

I got my PJ as a demo model with 12hr for £832 with remainder of the Epson warranty on bulb and unit. The Epson glasses (again demo unit) from same seller for 4, was a further £205 so was an excellent 'bundle deal'. I can get the TW6000 direct from America for £947 deliveried including all shipping and customs charges. this unit is badged as a 3010 but is identical to UK model but has none of the warranties which is a concern. Sorry, this was not a statment of who got their PJ for less, lol but an example that there is not a huge price jump, making the price very attractive and why I would be interested in getting one.

The Epson has a Panasonic 3D emitter and as I own both glasses (epson & panny) I can safely say there is NO difference excepte the panny are SO much more comfortable especially are they half the weight and great if you have a smaller head! lol. Price is about £75 new or £55 pre-owned on amazon against Epson's £90 new price or Ebay's £75 pre owned. The panny also recharges by usb in two minute for 25hrs charge! I am amazed what hifi magazine have not pick up on this. Panansonic have been in the 3D market from the start and you can see that Epson technology is still new to them in the glasses area.

Back to my main point, I put on Captian America in 3D and Shrek 2 3D to test colours versus blacks but noticed even with lights out the picture was a little dim in 3d mode which is why I'm thinking the TW6000 could make that needed boost to picture. Although cross-talk was a worry as you again rightly point out I didn't experience anything major although there was some 'blurring' of edges in fast scenes. overall the TW5900 is a great unit especially in 2D but it's that's 3D issue that is swaying me to the TW6000. Need to test one.

Do you have any idea if the 2010 Panasonic VT20 3D glasses, also work with TW5900 and TW6000? The code of the glasses is TY-EW3D10.

I have 2 pairs, and if they work, I will buy the TW6000, if they don't, and I will have to buy new 3D glasses, I think I will buy the TW5900.

For me, what it matters the most, are the black levels...does TW6000 has a huge advantage in black levels, keeping in mind that it has double the contrast, but also it's brighter than TW5900? Beeing more bright, the colours and blacks, won't be washed out in a dark room, compared to TW5900?

It's reaaaly haaard tooo chooose :wall:
