Hi,

Since discovering spotify i have upgraded my crappy old mini-system and bought a CA A5 amp and a set of wharfdale 9.0s and music sounds great.

However, my primary source is spotify which is connected from my laptops 3.5 jack to the amp via a looooooong cheap cable picked up at a market, which is ok short term but i would like to get the best out of "my new baby" system.

As i am very close to buying a PS3 slim i believe i can connect it wirelessly to the internet for spotify, and run the ps3 into the amp with a decent short cable.

Is this feasable? Is there any advice that would make for the best sound? reasonably priced hardware etc?

Thanks in advance for any help.

AFAIK there isn't a Spotify client for the PS3 yet, so you have a couple of options:

- get an Airport Express and Airfoil and stream spotify direct to your amp
- set up a DLNA server like jamcast on your laptop and use PS3 as a DLNA client

John, I have a similar set up - only with a Squeezebox rather than AE. Is it relatively simple to set up a DLNA server to stream to my amp?

I do have a PS3 but Id prefer not to use it this way. Id rather just have the laptop on running Spotify and to stream a "fake" radio signla to the squeezebox.

Also, if anyone knows, by doing the above can you save the signal from the DLNA as a station recognised by iPeng/Squeezecenter on start up? Like a regular direct link in the menus to a radio station. Or is there manual work to do each time?

PS - apologies if hijacking the thread!

You can't connect a PS3 directly to the internet and have it play Spotify (not yet anyway). You have to play Spotify on your computer and transmit it to the PS3 in the way it understands. The way to do this is to have a particular type of media server running on your PC - a DLNA server - and have your PS3 connect to that.

Alternatively, you can use a piece of software called airfoli, together with an apple airport express, to achieve the same result.

The first option should be free, the second not.

i'l google the "words" but in the meantime what, in your opinion is the best/easiest solution? Im prepared to pay a couple of quid.

Also, do you know whether the spotify/ps3 thing will be resolved anytime soon? Im assuming its a sony music issue. If they do "get over it", would my solution work?

I'm also in the process of connecting spotify to my hifi ... am also researching and trying to learn/see whats the best options ... (am a bit dumb when it comes to this sort of thing)

so far, seems like I may be going for a squeezebox duet system (I prefer wireless) ... it's not cheap though

your not kidding! ive just looked it up and the price for a "refurbished" in $ was 199.00!!!

ive just seen this to run from my laptop

http://whathifi.com/Review/Atlas-Equator/

and £48 is reasonable but, i cant get my laptop closer than 3m to my amp and still be able to comfortably use it for non-spottify stuff!!! Believe me , ive tried moving everything around but the only way would mean losing my freeview signal.(central london)

So, does this cable come longer?is there a big loss of quality per metre?

I have tried listening to 6music through the freeview and then through the laptop/cheap cable, and the quality is drastically reduced (although still better than through my old minisystem).

I'm starting to curse spottify since first encountering it at a mate's house. This "free" service has so far cost £350-laptop,£40 for laptop speakers (now redundant) £150 amp and speakers (richer sound open box, couple of half decent interconnects and 5m speaker cable thrown in

and now im looking to either pay £70ish for the wireless or £50 for a decent cable!!!

it would have been cheaper to rent a van and pick-up my old vinyl from my stepfathers attic.
