Has anyone tried comparing? Are the DAC's within cd players generally considered better than AV amps (i know it will depend on kit but what is the general concensus)? (hope im understanding the whole DAC thing!)

Admittedly in a different league, but my Marantz CD5001OSE into my Denon AVR1707 sound infinitely better through analogue stereo cables than either coaxial or optical digital. The soundstage is far more natural sounding (as much as the receiver can manage, anyway), and detail is far better.

I use the FL and FR inputs of the 5.1 analogue input on the receiver in preference to the normal CD input, as this also offers massive improvements.

With the help of a mates Marantz PM4001 amp I did a like for like comparison last week, and found my receiver not too far behind. But only because of the connections choices I've made. If I'd compared CD input for CD input, the receiver would undoubtedly have been trounced.

Gander:
i shant bother trying it out then, its an apollo.

Thanks

1. I had the Rega Apollo, and rest assured, the DAC in this cd player will be superior to the one in your AV receiver.

2. Analogue cables for best cd reproduction.

I have an Onkyo 875 and a Denon dvd1920

Using the coax out on the denon and the Onkyo DACs provides the best sound.
