Android to Get 100%+ speed boost with ART from Android 4.4 onwards.

Android 4.4 (Kitkat) comes with the option to use the upcoming Android RunTime System instead of the current Dalvik JVM to give a speed boost of approximately 100%.

This basically transforms Android from running in interpreted code using a Just-in-Time compiler to compiled native code.

This is currently giving around a 100% performance improvement in apps, albeit with a 10% increase in app size, with higher gains expected in the final release.

If you have an Android phone running KitKat (4.4) you can turn it on in Developer Settings -> Select Runtime.

This feature is expected to become standard in the next version of Android (4.5) aka Android 5.0

Dalvik already uses JIT, ART uses Ahead-of-Time compilation (the reason for the performance boost)

Where did you get the 100% performance boost from? Between 10 to 50% is what most are quoting.

Its also strongly advised you don't use it at the moment, as its a work in progress and causing issues with some apps

It is certainly feels faster in use but some apps (Whatsapp for instance) do not work at all.

Personally I feel the extra space the apps take is a small price to pay for an overall slicker interface.

It's up to 100% improvement and I think that was only on a couple but generally , you get a good improvement though it's still classed as work in progress.

Here a site where you can check if your apps work or not, so if all your apps work you can give it a go, as mentioned increased apps size and initial boot time while it converts everything to AOT is the downside , you can always go back if it doesn't work..

Edit , Maybe should have said but was going out when posted earlier, Running on ART Ahead of Time facility for a couple of days now no issues but my Nexus 4 not got a lot of apps , basically phone, music player and games..

But worth a punt ..
