Andrew....help

I posted a reply in "computer based music" asking about the fubar 4 dac/headamp. I provided the link in the above post, basically I need some advice on the fubar 4 as it is on special introductory offer at 125 euros from Firestone. I know you may not of reviewed it but is that a bargain?

Looking to buy my 1st dac/headamp to connect to my pc via usb, for my Grado SR80i phones. I was going to wait for a while to save up some cash but the special price is burning a hole in my pocket. I don't know hardly anything about dac/headamps so was after some advice.

Ok thanks Andrew, impossible to recommend a product you havn't heard before. Seems to be lots of choices available from different manufacturers, as you guys and girls see a lot of kit I was hoping you might of had some hands on experience with some of their products before. Have any Firestone products ever been reviewed by yourself or the magazine?

Looks like I need to do some googiling tomorrow after work and see if I can find any reviews, it might be a decent product for the money.

The Fubar4 has optical and coax in, with phono and headphones out... The Fubar3 didn't have the digital inputs.

I'm interested as to whether this is a good purchase. I'm yet to succumb to a DAC for my Macbook Pro, but this has me tempted. I'm interested as to the improvements this would provide.

Could anyone recommend the Fubar? Or any sub £100 dac/headphone amp?

SpiceWeasel,

It would appear the Fubar4 upsamples to 96kHz, whilst there is also a Fuber4-plus which upsamples to 192kHz...

Don't know how this affects the sonic performance, but atleast I've found a reason why they're offering this reduced price.

yeah - sorry got confused for a min over spec but then noticed has both usb and digital inputs - works out at £129 including postage - only concern would be the mains cable but hoping that is one of those with the slip in bits for different countries
got to be worth a punt for that money - have orderd one just to plug into computer and digital dock for best possible sound from my ipod

they are two different products fubar IV and the fubar IV plus

I am happy to recommend the USB DAC part of the Fubar 4. They are also very small and very well made. Elsewhere on the internet the headamp gets good reviews. The 4 has two DACs to take account that USB works up to 16bit/48KHz, while digital (either coax or optical) goes up to 24bit/192KHz. The 4 plus goes even further. But bear in mind CDs go up to 16bit/44.1Khz, so what you are doing is future proofing for high spec downloads and HDCD which may or may not take off.

As for the power supply, I am sure you specify your country and you get an appropriate PSU/transformer/wall wart or whatever you want to call it.

Please review when you get it, particularly against the Little Dot.

hopefully i had to put in country of delivery but didn't ask me which plug but hopefully pick up off that - there is a box where you can submit a question with your order so i just asked for one in there as well so hopefully back covered

have bought this for my bedroom nice and small don't expect it to be as good as the littledot but we will see - the biggest prob will be the dacs i use will be different for any comparison so prob not a fair contest

Please join the campaign of SpiceWeasel and me to get a group test of combined head amps/dacs! A review by you would be appreciated as there is not a huge amount of info out there. If you search Firestone Fubar USB DAC on the first page you find this

the last post being mine on 20/06/09. So I think such posts are very worthwhile.

I hope SW reads this before it is too late!

just had my order confirmed and invoice sent - says on bottom of order uk adaptor not sure if this automatic or because i asked but at least i know will be able to plug in immediately on arrival!

Will let you know how i get on!

Well I really can't afford it but the special offer price is too good to miss, just waiting for an e-mail with their bank details so I can do a bank transfer. Hopefully I will recieve the e-mail soon so I won't miss out on the offer, went for an all silver unit with the "limited edition artwork".

Thanks to idc and everyone else who has posted, I just hope this will be a big improvement over my Creative x-fi soundcard. For the money it's worth a punt, should fetch a good price on fleebay considering the retail is 225 euros if it all goes pear shaped.

EDIT: Just done a bank transfer, just have to wait for payment to clear.
