i'm looking for the best £500 amplifier, preferably with a taught base and a clean treble?

Give the Cambridge Audio 740A a listen. Very clean and highly detailed sound. I've had two and enjoyed many things about them but, on both occasions, found it too clinical long term, so it needs careful auditioning.

Otherwise I'd second Chebby's suggestion. Creek amps are excellent.

I'd also try the Rega Brio 3. A brilliant little amplifier.

Source and musical tastes would be handy to know as well as speakers.

Fully agree with the Cyrus 8vs2 selection but also see if you can find the Roksan Kandy LIII as well as the NAD C352 integrated (2nd hand via eBay etc...)
