I am looking for some recommendations for a solid state amp that will sync in to my new system of an Audiolab CDQ8200 CD player and ATC smc 11 speakers, amp needs to be smooth and powerful as my ATC,s need serious power and are analytical in their sound. Budget is approx 400, so I will buying 2nd hand, currently using an icon audio 40 amp but although at lowish volume it sounds fantastic it lacks the power when extra volume is required.

Can you connect a power amp on the Icon and have the volume controled with Icon's preamp? That way if you get say a Quad 606 to biamp, Quad on woofers, Icon on tweeter.

How loud do you play music? The Icon should be fine at 'normal' levels, but if you are looking for wall-shaking volume, that's another issue altogether.

*EDIT* Try looking for a Nad C370. Immensely powerful and should have a similar presentation to your Icon. In saying that, the Nad may not have the overall quality, as Nads generally lack a little tranparency.

Also look at Roksan Kandy LIII or Musical Fidelity A300

Hi S83

Also consider a NAD C270 power amp for your SCM11 monitors. Use the C270 on its own or picking up on what Vlad has said use the C270's variable input and adjust the level control to gain match the C270 to the Icon (C270 for mid/bass and Icon for HF).

All the best

The Icon cannot connect to a power amp, but can be used as a stand alone power amp, the Audiolab CD already has a pre amp built in. Not to sure if I can add another power amp to the pre amp using the Icon as well?

I'd keep an eye out for a used Quad 909 amplifier. I'm not sure what price they command, but lovely mid and very smooth.

A bit too expensive even 2nd hand........

How does the 606 sound? Is it smooth?

Hi S83 Trike

to use a second power amp use XLR pre out from 8200CDQ to feed one power amp and RCA pre out to feed second power amp.

or use 2 x single RCA to 2 RCA cables

or use 2 x RCA Y splitters leads (1 male RCA to 2 female RCA)

both power amps must be gain matched (hence the added flexibility of the C270)

All the best

Read a few reviews on the MF, looks ideal- if I can find one, spent the whole of yesterday trying to source one, no luck so far.

There is a used Caspian mk1 integrated and a Caspian power amp available Ebay, so they should be better than a Kandy ?
