Amp mains hum

Hi,

I've just bought my first Hi-Fi system, consisting of Cambridge Audio Azur 640A V2 amp, 640C V2 CD player and S70 speakers. The system itself sounds superb to me, and I've been amazed by the detail present in my CDs which I never knew was there before!

The one niggle I have is that the amp emits an audible mains hum, which is rather annoying. Although not noticeable when playing music, I can clearly hear it from a few metres away when the system is not playing, even in standby. Only the amp produces the hum; the CD player is completely silent.

Sorry for what might be a rather stupid question, but is this normal, or could it be a fault with the amp? I think I have ruled out interference from other sources by disconnecting the CD player and turning off all other electrical items around the house.

Thanks

Or possible earthing problem may have a loop somewhere, that is what happened to my system and I sorted it out and it's sweet now.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take it back to the shop and see what they say.
