Starting over. Room size 6 x 4 mtr.Require good DVD and CD reproduction. Looking at the Onkyo TX-SR605 and the Yamaha RX-V861 as options or is it worth paying more for the Onkyo TX-SR705.

Any ideas on speakers or source components? I'd go for the TX-SR605, which would be more than adequate for a room that size.

I,m looking for the same advice. My room is even smaller but it's been suggested that I go for the Onkyo 875. I'm getting more confused by the minute. Andrew, if you get chance, check my thread on starting from fresh. What do you think?

I think your suggestion that you should
go to my local dealer, tell him what I want to acheive and the budget,
ask him to put togther various options that fit the bill, audition
them, and then just walk away with whatever I feel is the best one
is pretty sound.

And presumably, by logical extension, don't bother with these forums if you need any advice.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

I meant only that there's no substitute for finding a reliable retailer, spending time audtioning and then buying something with which you're truly happy.

Sorry to lose you, and hope you enjoyed your three days on the forums.

Eh?!? What a plum!

From personal experience, the advice on this forum (and associated mag) has been spot on. Keep up the good work

As for the orginal post, I would agree that the 605 would more than suffice for a room that size. I personally went for the 875 as I wanted the additional video processing it provides...................oh and also the hernia from lifting the bloody thing!

dear Andrew,

I am also a glad owner of a pair of Michaelson chronos amps. I have not had the opportunity to compare it to the todays most respected amps (dealers suggest to replace it with a more modern one, since - according to their opinion (surprisingly :)) - technology improved a lot.)

How do you see that? Is the new better than the old, or just different? According to your opinion in which price range should I look around to find something definitely better?

thanks Tam s

You could probably make a strong case for a number of amps in the sub-£5000 arena doing what they do, and doing it just as well, but IMHO they are mad old dinosaurs, very covetable and still quite capable of sounding gorgeous.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to change.
