According to John Rockwell's book, Sinatra: An American Classic, when asked at a party in the mid-1970s if he had a favorite album among his recordings, Sinatra unhesitatingly chose this one.

As someone who owns and enjoys the entire Capitol canon of Francis Albert (less so the later, patchier RCA years), i'd place Only the Lonely as my fave, too - it and its also Ava Gardner-mourning In the Wee Small Hours are incredible.

I recently invested in the remastered, heavyweight vinyl version of Only the Lonely, and it's jawdroppingly good - haven't played the CD since

Simon Lucas:I'm amazed you didn't hear your 'Sinatra on the Forums' alarm going off all yesterday.

I couldn't hear it over the din of my nieces/nephew celebrating Mother's Day (or Mothering Sunday, as my ma still insists we call it).

OK tried a few snippets of 'Only the Lonely' just now and that was enough melancholia for one morning! I just wanted to grab his drink, stub out his cigarette, and yell... "Get over it man! You are a middle aged Rou‚ with sticky-out ears who lives in a Casino, wears a raincoat and a silly hat, drinks like a fish, smokes 70 fags a day and yet could still pull any teenage girl in America. What is your problem you louche old whinger?"

It was amazing what he could do with the voice though. Almost sounded in places like a cello bow being drawn very slowly and just 'catching' here and there to add emotional impact. Very clever. The orchestra are just sort of breathing with him in places. But still, too much of a 'downer' for me.

Does this LP qualify Frank as the first 'Emo'?

Hi Chebby

Almost impossible to pick one 'best' ever album from Sinatra, but if your looking for a compilation i'd go for one i have.

It's a double cd ,My Way The Best Of Frank Sinatra,46 tracks, haven't seen it in the shops for a while.I picked it up for a crazy price, around £6.00 when Tesco slashed all their prices a few years ago.Already had most of them on other CDs & vinyl.

Strange thing is i have a CD,same title containing 1cd with 24 tracks & this cd is included in the 2CD issue. Both on Reprise which was his own label, both issued by Warner 1997.

In my opinion nobody could use lyrics like Sinatra,Tony Bennett comes real close though.

HMV website brings up mountains of his CDs with some crazy prices .
