I am thinking about buying a new blu-ray/ surround amplifier. I am old enough to remember the argument that it’s acceptable to spend around 70% of your funds on the source and the rest on the amplifier. But as the amplifier now does the majority of the work for decoding and the like will that now work the other way round? In general will I get better results from a £700 player and £400 amp or a £400 player and a £700 amp?

If you have a budget of £1100, I would be spending a lot less on the player. I would allocate £200 tops and put the bulk of it towards the receiver. However, you didn't mention what speakers you have. There is no point in spending nearly a grand on cheap speakers.
