I have a pc and xbox one
- currently have a steel series sebiraV2 £60 for gaming
- currently have some akg k430 £30 for music on the pc/ipad ect.

what i want is the comfort of the over ear headphones and more the sound of the akg portable headphones but with more quailty for around £75-£100.

I will be listen to spofity 80% of the time on gamig pc with standard sound card.
indie music from 90's, blues music and female vocals so id prefer a slight less quailty sound that is an allrounder than a one genre specialist if that makes sense
my shortlist is

Grado sr60e or 80e if the later is worth £20 extra.
Beyerdynamic 80ohms or 250ohms guessing the later would require a headphone amp but would it better in the long run if i sufferered than added one later in the year.
sennheiser hd518

i will be listening between 9-11 @ night which is when my lad is in bed and mrs is at work so they can be closed back or open back.
My first thoughts is Grado sr80e

Interesting.

I did listen to the K550 and found it ... meehh. At the time I described it like something squeezed through a tube and I did wonder what the fuss was all about. This was through a Roksan's integrated headphone out so may not have been the best option but a pair of Grado 80e's was an ear opener (for that amount of money) through the same headphone out.

I bought them and have not regretted it since, used with cyrus equipment, laptop (with and without Dragonfly 1.2) and my phone. Superb for the little money imho (and you get something handmade in the U.S.A ... if that's important :)

when you say squeezed thru tube? What did you mean? Soundstage not so wide? Im not up on headphones to be honest...my akg550 seem not so wide but very detailed esp on high res stuff...do headphones have soundstage in a exspansive way?

Yes they sounded just flat compared to the dynamic, open Grados.

Had a listen to some sennheiser headphones today thru my sony walkman hi res player..thought akg550 far superior..so those grado headphones must be stunning!

Grado's aren't stunning they're just different, and an acquired taste. I'm down to 3 sets of phones now HD650, HD598 and SR225. I, personally, find the HD598's a kind of love child between Senn and Grado but I do relegate this h'phone to mp3 and PC duties only. The HD650 and SR225 are for serious listening. If you wear spectacles then Grado can be very uncomfortable as they are on ear, not over ear, but they are very easy to drive from a portable device.

As DM has said the Grado's are very open and dynamic and are best at low to mid volume, at high volume they are very bright. The SR60's or 80's are worth a punt at the price - they will both sound the same, amazing detail but very little in the way of bass.
