Hi

I just took the plunge and bought a Sony s350, this will be connected via HDMI to my Onkyo ts605. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the best settings to adopt for best PQ and AQ ?

All help appreciated

Thanks BIG CHRIS

I just picked it up today and Wow am I HAPPY !

It looks and sounds stunning !

I have set the audio output to direct at the moment and the picture output is 1080i as my tv ain't full 1080(next on the list!) is there a way of filling the screen or must you look at it "as the director intended" ?

Not watched anything yet but had a quick flick through and I have to say I thought independence day for an old movie was stunning!

Hi briinthesky,

I have same blu ray(Sony 350) with the onkyo 606 amp connected with QED HDMI-P leads from source to amp, and amp to TV. I have it set up so the amp does all the decoding (display on amp will show 'true HD' and 'DTS HD Master' when it is decoding them). I felt the sound was better this way.

I also have an HD ready tv but one that will take 1080p/24FPS, so I have the sony set to the full 1080p output.

Hope that helps.......

Thanks Pete

I have set up so the amp decodes and I have to say finally seeing the TRUE HD light up makes me smile!

Have you had any issues with DTS MA soundtracks and this sonic boom thing ? although from what i read its effecting certain makes more than others.?

Hi briinthe sky,

Do you think it sounds better decoded from amp too, thou? Or was it just me?

Not heard about the 'boom' thing on DTS. Watched 'Incredible Hulk' the other night on DTS master and had no problems at all!! Admittedly that is the first time I have used the DTS master as a lot have the true HD soundtrack on them instead. (True HD is meant to be slightly better, anyway)

Hope that helps.....

In my humble opinion DTS MASTER is the best sound I have listened to although some studios seem better at it than others.

I do think that the Onkyo does a fine job with the decoding, although i have yet to try the sony doing it.

If you like action movies try Independance Day, for an old movie they did a superb job with the sound (DTS MA)

So I got my first blu ray today but I think my TV is the let down its a Hitachi p42h4011 there are no reviews looked natural in the show room and not fatiguing bright and willing to burn out your eyes so I picked it. But now that I have the blu ray on it, i think it falls short of that 3D quality and bright showroom appeal like the samsungs display some I should say not all. Its resolution oddly is only 1024 x 1080p Its plays 1080p but is it really.

Mike

My Hitachi has the same resolution 1024x 1080, when I had it hooked up to a htpc it reported that its max res was 1920 x1080 but I could never get there.

I think the best you will be able to get is 1080i it should still look stunning though! however I saw a ps3 on a new 1080 sony 40" the other day and it did look better than the Hitachi. I'll need to save my pennies before I get a new one though!

Hi briinthesky,

I have same blu ray(Sony 350) with the onkyo 606 amp

Hi Pistol Pete,

How do you find CD playback with the Sony 350 and Onkyo 606 combination- Seeing that Onkyo is not the most musical around.

Thanks

Hi Faizal,

I don't use the sony for cd playback, I have an old Marantz CD 63 KI for that. However, I did compare the two when i bought it, and it was not too bad at all. The marantz (£500 in its day) was always going to be the better sounding machine thou. More in the bass department, with greater detail.

As for the onkyo - again I find the sound ok. I used to have a pair of tannoy dc2000's and a marantz PM6010 KI amp, so it was never going to be better than that combo. I have put the speakers on the Q acoustic stands (sand filled) and on granite plinths to optimize sound quality. However I did notice a good improvement to the sound quality of stereo playback when I started to use the tacima CSC929 mains conditioner.

Best £30 I've spent for a while.

Hope that helps....
