Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a decent, fairly cheap piece of kit which can play cds, rip them, and then you can put the ripped mp3s onto an ipod? I have speakers and an amp etc but my cd player has given up the ghost. Don't mind if it's a mini hifi or just a cd player/hard drive thingy.

I haven't bought a player in about ten years so I don't know where to start!

Thanks

Sean

Yes, but I want a new CD player for my hifi as my old one has broken, and so I figured it would be good to have one that will rip, store and allow the files to be taken off onto an iPod. Is that not possible? Sean

Cofnchtr:Hi,

Don't you already own a PC/MAC?

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

And if you do own a PC:

Exact Audio Copy (to rip) and LAME (to encode rips to MP3, plugin for EAC).

Ah, well I'm sure they exist. But you'll be paying extra or end up with a lesser quality CDP for the money. Any reason you don't want to use a PC for the job? I can't imagine a stand alone device beating EAC for rip quality if you allow for zero error correction (it does multiple passes until the rip is exact).

Thanks for this guys- I've been using iTunes to rip from CD for years and have read/heard about those you mentioned. Downloaded EAC and LAME 3.98 the other night and tested a few CD's- very impressive. Took a bit of research to understand how to set up EAC. In the end I've gone with Lame set to CBR 320 (insane setting). Seems to give perfect results every time and I like the fact that EAC gives you a rip report when it's finished to let you know the quality is spot on.
