Adding Home Cinema to HiFi

Hi

I would like to add a home cinema amp to my current Cyrus system, which includes a DACX and Pre X vs with Smart Power Plus. I only want the HC amp to take care of the centre and rear right and left channels, leaving my Cyrus system to take care of the front right and left channels. Basically I want something that does what the Cyrus AV Master 8 does, although I don't want that particular model. I'm thinking of the Denon AVR 2310.

Would that model, or indeed any other HC amp, be able to do what I want and if so how would it be connected to my Cyrus gear?

Would it be better to connect to the DACX or to the Pre X vs and would there be any problems syncronising both amps? I currently have my Sky HD box connected to the DACX with a 120ms delay on the Optical Output.

Any comments would be gratefully appreciated as Denon and a couple of well known sales outlets haven't bothered to reply to my questions.

Kind regards

Stuz

You need an AV amp that has pre-outs for the front channels, you need to connect these to a line-in, probably on the pre-amp. This is an analogue signal so no point sending it to a DAC.

You'd need to connect the Sky's optical to the AV amp, otherwise you won't get Dolby Digital 5.1 (where available). Then when it's all plugged in, set the Cyrus amp's volume to a memorable level (12 o'clock if you have a rotary volume control), then run the automatic set-up, the amp will work out what levels to set the centre and rears to in order to match the fronts. Then it should just be a case of adjusting the volume on the AV amp.

This way you don't need the AV amp when listening to music (unless it's multi-channel music obviously).

I have just done something similar.

I have a Yamaha DSP AX763, which seems ok as far as HC goes, I also have Audiolab kit as my hifi. I connect the 763 to the 8000s via the pre outs, and run the 8000s in power mode, this means there are no volume issues.

Also allows me to enjoy music with just my hifi.

I feel I have the best of both worlds.

Hi

Thanks for that. So once the automatic set-up is complete and the centre and rears match the fronts, if I then turn up the volume on the AV amp the volume will also increase on the fronts, or will I have to adjust the Cyrus manually to syncronise the fronts? I won't be listening to multi channell music.

Cyrus CDXt, DACX, PreX vs, Smartpower Plus, Yamaya RXV1065, PMC GB1's, DB1M-C & DB1+'s, Sky HD, Cyrus Biwire, Chord Carnival Silver Screen, Cyrus and Chord Interconnects. Adding Blu Ray 3D later.
